Building a Custom Deck with a Swinging Chair Arch!

What happens here

Prepare the structural posts for the cable railing system. These posts are made of composite-clad 6x6 lumber. Using an intermediate spacer (which has pre-drilled holes matching the cable spacing) as a template, mark the precise locations for drilling on the posts. For highly accurate 90-degree holes, use a specialized drill guide (Drillblock) to start the holes. Once a pilot hole is established, use a long drill bit to bore completely through the posts. The presenter demonstrates adjusting the DeWalt drill's torque settings to avoid over-tightening and listening for a specific sound when the screw bottoms out. Troubleshooting for misaligned holes is also shown, suggesting methods to ensure the cable can pass through smoothly by re-drilling or slightly enlarging. The presenter emphasizes that for custom projects, using blank posts and drilling them on-site allows for greater flexibility compared to pre-drilled posts.

Goal: Prepare structural posts with accurately drilled holes for threading cable railing.

Tools and materials

  • Chalk Line/Marker — Marking hole locations
  • Composite-Clad 6x6 Posts — The structural elements for the railing system
  • Drill — Drilling holes through the posts
  • Drill Guide — Ensuring perfectly perpendicular drilling
  • Intermediate Spacer Decorators — Used as a template to mark precise drilling points for cables
  • Long Drill Bit — Boring completely through thick posts

are in then it can eventually get [Music] toed so I'm drill through this 6x6 post uh so our cable can go straight through and what I'm using as a template is our intermediate spacer that goes on our section so obviously this has the same exact layout the one thing that you need to be considerate of is I can butt this up right here but it's not going to go totally up to here so you need to account for that so I cut off a/4 in off of this so I can butt it up right here and I know that our layout's still going to be around the money so got it centered here I made a mark on the bottom so I can just hold it right there and got my chalk shot so what I'm going to do is just get these started like that and because I want the holes on both sides to line up perfectly I need to make sure I'm going in at 90° so I've got this little drill guide here and that's going to keep me 90° 90° yeah 180 yeah 90° perpendicular to my hole and boom so it's going to start me off nice and good there all right boom so now that I've got that where's my long bit I got to get a nice long bit and then I'll connect those two holes cuz I already got this side drilled out and then we'll see if the holes line see what is he doing now I don't want it to blow out this side he's definitely going to mess this up I'll get it started from both sides so should be hopefully it's a nice clean hole HW Tu have to just go back and forth a couple see I knew it I'm going to have to just make a bigger hole on this side let me try not going all the way through see how that works after I had the first one the holes didn't line up absolutely perfect so uh the rest of them what I did was I didn't go all the way through from both sides I just did um about 75 % from one side and then drilled in from this side to connect the two holes inside and it's going through really nicely and we have a clean hole on both sides so I'll show you in a little bit how I'm going to fix this one um I don't want to drill out a bigger hole and it looks like based on the rest of these that's not going to be necessary so stay tuned
