What happens here
Immediately following the nozzleman's application of concrete, a dedicated team of skilled finishers enters the pool excavation. They employ a variety of specialized hand tools, including screeds, various types of trowels (e.g., steel, magnesium, bull floats), and floats, to meticulously shape the freshly applied concrete to the precise contours and elevations of the pool design. This crucial step involves forming smooth benches, custom steps, and establishing the overall uniform and smooth surface of the pool's interior. This initial shaping and finishing ensures the pool shell is not only structurally sound but also perfectly prepared for subsequent finishing layers, such as plaster, tiling, or pebble finishes.
Goal: Achieve the desired shape, uniform thickness, and initial surface finish of the concrete pool shell.
Tools and materials
- Chemical-Resistant Gloves — Protecting hands from the caustic nature of wet concrete
- Floats — Performing initial smoothing and compacting of the concrete surface, bringing 'fat' (cement paste) to the surface
- Protective Footwear — Protecting feet from wet concrete, sharp objects, and heavy equipment
- Screeds — Leveling and roughly shaping large areas of the freshly applied concrete
- Trowels
- Freshly Sprayed Concrete — Being shaped, smoothed, and finished to form the pool interior
