BEST Way To Paint Doors. AIRLESS SPRAYING.

this crispy Idaho painter here on paint live TV today I got a really cool project and we're gonna be spraying some doors I got two custom doors here and two custom doors in the back and we're going to show you how we go about painting these doors and then making them have a glossy finish automobile like finished I'll stay tuned for this video alright so here we are out here getting ready to do these doors and we're gonna walk you through the entire process step by step I'm not gonna explain it all at once we're just gonna show you as we go these are kind of a challenge and these doors are a combination of different substrates these are a vinyl door so you've got two different types of vinyl here they're different colors we've got metal here and then we've got wood here and then we got wood on the edge of the door so it's kind of a challenge of what to decide what to paint these doors with and then the ones in the back have like a very fine grain to them so I wanted a product that's really thin that's not gonna take and eliminate that grain but I just wanted to have that a really good look a sprayed-on custom automobile like finish it so I decided to use PPG breakthrough that's what I'm gonna be using it's a self priming coating that can go on plastic and go on metal can go on wood could even be use on concrete so we're gonna be using that so I'm gonna begin the process by painting these doors I'm gonna start masking them we're gonna show you the masking process then I'm gonna remove them and then we're gonna spray them and put them back on so here we go so I'm gonna start masking I like to damask the doors while they're ops I don't have to bend over to mask them I'm a really big fan of frog tape so frog tape has a product on the edge of it that any paint or any liquid moisture that hits it it actually swells up it's called paint walk technology and it won't allow anything to bleed underneath and I don't want anything on this frosted glass or the glass in the back frog tape has a more affordable option now this is their blue version it's exactly the same as the green tape just less expensive because it comes in contractor packs I'm gonna begin just masking these windows I got a mask inside now and we'll start working this process I'm going to be using my master I've got a two edged knife right here that I use to trim the corners of my masking all right so I just got done with adding all the plastic right here and this is a process called batch processing so I'm doing all like steps all at once now I'm gonna go down fold in and I'm gonna fill it out versus just doing you'll all one panel and then moving down all one panel it's gonna take you a little bit longer if you just batch process and do all like processes together the process is going to is going to go a little bit faster for you so now I'm ready for the next batch process and that's gonna be trimming my corners just gonna be using got a two edged knife so the cool thing about these five and one tools right here is they actually have a blade on them I'm gonna want that blade to be extremely sharp if it's been used before I'll flip it over change the blade because I want to be able to cut really nice sharp corners here I don't want any glass exposed because if there's any glass exposed that glass will actually get painted that's that side I'm gonna go back into the other side mass outside and then we'll begin pulling off the hardware and then remove the doors all right so I got looked up found the instructions got this thing off came off pretty easily it's interesting this plunger had a long screw in the top short screw in the bottom and if I didn't know that I could turn around and like end up using this one someplace else or if I reverse them this little screws probably not gonna get very much bite on the top because a long screw was in there so that's exactly why I like to just put them back in where they came from put some tape over there it does say up so I know that's up screws are right there where I can find them now I'm to the point where I could almost take this door off I'm gonna take and start cleaning it with my Dawn dish soap right here in my microfiber towel make sure you use a towel that has no contaminant it's on it that's you know clean if you don't get any of these and all the contaminants off once again I say you could run into a problem you know what we call fisheye and that's were the surface tension of the surface or contaminant is different than the surface tension of the paint and what you end up seeing is these little round circles where the paint is moving away from the contaminant and they look like these little circles and we call them fish eyes this common term I'm not going to paint this metal strip at all I'm leaving that metal that's kind of like a powder coated metal the powder coating is always the best finish yeah also since this doors white we'll just leave it but I'm gonna do you want to pick these doors off and then I don't want all the air conditioning to leave this house and cause a customer you know a bunch of flies coming in and a bunch of money and I'm lost you know cool air so I'll take the doors off and then I'll put plastic up to cover that so now I'm getting ready to spray I've got my sprayer here one of the things I'm gonna do I don't want anything to go wrong with these doors they're smooth doors I don't want any contamination I'm just gonna run some soapy water I got some Dawn dish soap in here I'm gonna run that through my sprayer you know first and then just to get that sprayer all cleaned out make sure there's no contaminants inside the sprayer from its previous use this is just soapy water so I could just spray right out here now I'm just gonna take and run clean water got the soapy water we'll just run it some clean water through it now without soap all right so I'm gonna get ready to spray these doors I'm gonna be using I got to a Titan 410 impact sprayer right here doesn't have a pressure gauge so I'm just gonna have to go by feel I'm spraying with an Rx pro gun I'm gonna be spraying these doors I want a fine finish and automobile like finish so I'm gonna be using titans fine finish tips these purple tips I'm gonna be using a 410 tip that is one of their fine finish tips so I'm gonna load up my paint and we'll get that process going here I'm gonna then I'll once I get my paint loaded up I'll stand up my doors and get them ready go so just got about just got it almost ready this Wraith mouth stop that piece of metal I don't want to get any paint on the weather strips down here so I'm gonna you know just mask those weather strips off down here and then we'll be ready to spray so I'm getting ready to spray the doors now got my gun sprayers all set up using once again a 410 tip I've got it dialed in it's running around 2,300 psi safety is always first important got a respirator wearing some eye protection if you're ever doing any airless spraying I always keep in my wallet on an injection card this is very important if you ever get injected you can actually lose a limb or die so make sure you have an injection card with you that you give to the hospital staff if you ever get injected it's a serious injury so get ready to go no quick pointers while spraying you see I was never starting and stopping on my door because if you start on your door especially a smooth door like this you're gonna get what we call is spits anytime you have a gun extension which extends is extends my reach makes it easier for me to spray which I always use you're gonna get some spits with it so just make sure you start off your surface start and stop off the surface so everywhere I was going I was starting soft being off my surface so I get no spits on this glassy smooth finish right here looks really good I don't see any light spots it's already starting to dry so it's looking pretty good I'll look over it and decide whether y'all want to put another coat on it or not all right so we got the two front doors sprayed they're all dry I've spent you know several hours we've got the back French doors with glass there sprayed first coat and they're sitting there dry and these were sprayed with two coats now we're gonna pull down this plastic plastic and do the hanging process get these doors up and out of the way just got to be careful with them because they're dry but they're not cure so you just got a handle of my I carried them up here by I mean where the hinges were inside here I grabbed onto this metal right there where um I wasn't actually grabbing the paint where I could actually scratch it or put fingerprints on the paint all right we got the doors all hung now the last process I'd like to do is just take a razor blade this is a simple little straight razor blade right here on this small handy little tool and I'm gonna clean up all the edges right here anything that may have bled through the tape just make sure I got some nice sharp edges I got a few you know here and there that can be fixed I'm just gonna wipe down the glass for the customers make sure you know if you're not using any type of cleaner of the paint's not dried or cured just wiping down the glass making sure there's not a lot of dust on them there's a few corners that could be tucked in here and finished up doors all done looks absolutely amazing and it took I don't know about four hours to do this project so we did these two custom doors right here in the front and then did two custom doors in the back I did use a product and this is a PPG product called breakthrough and I used it one other time before these doors right here right here are completely smooth and they were a mixture of vinyl and metal and I spent a lot of time researching different products because this is a high-traffic area it's a front door I wanted something that didn't build a lot but had high solids covered really well and was gonna be very durable the back door is a vinyl and it's got very slight grain too and I didn't want anything that was gonna fill up that grain I wanted a high solids product that was it didn't have a whole lot of body and thickness to it so I wouldn't fill it up it looked amazing in the back breakthrough in the can it feels really watery it sprayed out really nice this is a product from PPG it's made out nice it hung very well it dried very fast I was able to to code it in less than an hour it does say from some live research I'll just read it it's a waterborne acrylic interior exterior paint I'll read the back of it it says ideal use on interior and exterior high-traffic areas that are subject to constant abuse and frequent cleaning with mild household cleaners and that made me feel pretty confident about it it says ideal for use on properly prepared or previously painted drywall plaster interior wood and metal surfaces I had metal on here that was gonna be spraying and I wanted it to match the door so you know and it was kind of a high-gloss metal it says breakthrough as a self prime self priming - masonry fiberglass laminate and some plastics and ceramic tile so this was kind of like the really ideal scenario for breakthrough after spraying it it's I really really liked it it bonded really well I know the adhesion was really good because it was really difficult to get off of my hands it says um ideal use on dry concrete floors so you even use it on floors so amazing product I really really liked it I would consider using it on interior trim packs I definitely would consider using it on cabinets if you're not gonna be using an HVLP sprayer and spraying lacquers or even high industrial coatings like say like wren or something like that PPG breakthrough would probably be a really
