What happens here
After the sub-grade is prepared, spread a uniform layer of crushed stone or gravel, typically 4 to 8 inches deep, over the entire excavated area. This layer serves as the primary base for the pavers. Using a rake and shovel, spread the crushed stone evenly, and then compact it thoroughly with a plate compactor. For every 2 inches of material laid, compact it. Then, spread a 1-inch layer of bedding sand (concrete sand or coarse sand) over the compacted base. Utilize screed rails (e.g., metal or PVC pipes) and a straightedge or screed board to precisely level the sand layer, creating a perfectly smooth and consistent surface for the pavers. This step is crucial for the final appearance and long-term stability of the paver installation.
Goal: Create a stable and level base for paver installation.
Tools and materials
- Bedding Sand Local supplier — Providing a level surface for pavers to sit on
- Crushed Stone/Gravel Local quarry — Creating the primary load-bearing base layer
- Geotextile Fabric Non-specific — Separating the base aggregate from the sub-grade soil
- Plate Compactor Wacker Neuson — Compacting the crushed stone base layer
- Rake True Temper — Spreading and rough leveling of base materials
- Screed Rails — Guiding the screed board to achieve a consistent sand depth
- Straightedge/Screed Board — Leveling the bedding sand by pulling across the screed rails
