Are you buying the Wrong lumber? πŸ€” #carpentry #framing #test

What happens here

Following the first test, the 2x4 lumber piece labeled 'Plain' (without the pith) is placed into the hydraulic press, maintaining the same orientation as the previous sample. The hydraulic pump is operated again, progressively increasing the pressure on the board. The pressure gauge indicates a significantly higher load before failure. This board resists stress up to approximately 16,000 pounds of pressure before it breaks. The nature of its failure appears more abrupt and complete, consistent with higher energy storage and greater inherent strength.

Goal: Measure the breaking strength of lumber without pith.

Tools and materials

  • 2x4 Lumber β€” The material being tested
  • Custom-built Hydraulic Press β€” Applying controlled pressure to the lumber samples
  • Hydraulic Bottle Jack β€” Applying the physical force to the lumber
  • Hydraulic Pump β€” Generating hydraulic pressure for the bottle jack
  • Pressure Gauge β€” Measuring the applied force in pounds
  • Safety Glasses β€” Protecting eyes from splinters and debris during material failure
