Are you buying the Wrong lumber? 🤔 #carpentry #framing #test
What happens here
The 2x4 lumber piece labeled 'Pith' is carefully positioned horizontally within a custom-built hydraulic press. The hydraulic pump, connected to a bottle jack and a pressure gauge, is then actuated by hand. As the pump is operated, the bottle jack applies increasing downward pressure to the center of the lumber. The pressure gauge clearly indicates the applied load. The board visibly bends, cracks, and eventually fractures under approximately 10,000 pounds of pressure, confirming its relative weakness.
Goal: Measure the breaking strength of lumber containing pith.
Tools and materials
- 2x4 Lumber — The material being tested
- Custom-built Hydraulic Press — Applying controlled pressure to the lumber samples
- Hydraulic Bottle Jack — Applying the physical force to the lumber
- Hydraulic Pump — Generating hydraulic pressure for the bottle jack
- Pressure Gauge — Measuring the applied force in pounds
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from splinters and debris during material failure
