What happens here

This video demonstrates how to install a pop-up drain assembly in a plastic sink. First, silicone is applied to the top nut and bottom washer of the drain assembly to create a watertight seal. Next, Teflon tape and pipe dope are applied to the threads of the drain tailpiece to prevent leaks. The tailpiece is then inserted into the drain opening and the top nut is hand-tightened. Channel locks are used to further tighten the nut. Finally, any excess silicone is cleaned up.
