Lay the Gravel and Sand Base

What happens here
Once the trench is excavated and compacted, lay down a layer of crushed gravel, typically 4-6 inches thick. This layer provides essential drainage and a stable foundation. Spread the gravel evenly across the trench and compact it thoroughly with a plate compactor or hand tamper until it is firm and level. On top of the compacted gravel, add a layer of bedding sand, usually 1-2 inches thick. Use screed boards and a long, straight edge (like a 2x4) to 'screed' or level the sand perfectly, creating a smooth and consistent surface for the pavers. This step is absolutely critical for achieving the 'perfect border' effect seen in the video, as any inconsistencies will show in the final product.
Goal: Create a firm, level, and well-draining base for the pavers.
Tools and materials
- Level — Regularly checking the level of the screeded sand
- Plate Compactor — Thoroughly compacting the gravel base. A hand tamper can be used for very small areas
- Rake — Spreading gravel and sand evenly
- Screed Boards — Providing guides for leveling the sand layer
- Shovel — Moving gravel and sand into the trench
- Straight Edge — Leveling the bedding sand by dragging across the screed boards
- Bedding Sand — Providing a perfectly level surface for laying pavers
- Crushed Gravel — Creating the primary drainage and support layer
