Install Paver Units and Edge Restraints

What happens here
With the base prepared, begin laying the paver units. For straight sections, place the rectangular pavers end-to-end, gently tapping them into place with a rubber mallet. Ensure they are consistently level both horizontally and vertically using a level. For curved sections, such as around the house perimeter and especially the circular tree border shown, this is where the 'perfect cuts' come into play. You will need to use a paver nipper or a wet saw to cut pavers to fit the precise curves and angles. The circular border around the tree demands numerous intricate cuts to achieve a seamless, professional look. Install rigid or flexible edge restraints along the outer edge of the paver border, securing them with landscaping spikes, to prevent the pavers from shifting over time.
Goal: Lay all paver units according to the planned design, ensuring they are level, secure, and precisely cut.
Tools and materials
- Ear Protection — Protecting ears from loud noise when operating a wet saw
- Knee Pads — Providing comfort and protection during prolonged kneeling
- Level — Continuously checking the level and pitch of individual pavers and sections
- Paver Nipper — Manually cutting pavers for curves and angles. Best for smaller, more brittle pavers
- Rubber Mallet — Gently tapping pavers into place and adjusting their level
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from debris and dust, especially when cutting
- Wet Saw — Precisely cutting pavers, especially for complex curves and hard materials
- Landscaping Spikes — Anchoring the edge restraints into the ground
- Paver Blocks / Edging Stones — Forming the decorative and functional border
- Rigid or Flexible Edge Restraints — Securing the perimeter of the pavers to prevent lateral movement
