2-tier retaining wall

What happens here

After laying the first course, subsequent courses are stacked on top, typically offset by half a block for increased stability (a running bond pattern). Each course should be checked for level and plumb, both horizontally and vertically. If your wall requires geogrid reinforcement, it should be laid at specified intervals, extending back into the drainage aggregate. The backfill with drainage aggregate is added and compacted behind each course before the next course is laid. The video refers to this process as to 'build this wall up,' implying the repetitive nature of laying blocks, backfilling, and reinforcing.

Goal: Continuously build the wall to the desired height, integrating backfill and reinforcement for each course.

Tools and materials

  • Geogrid — Reinforcement for taller walls
  • Level — Checking level and plumb of each course
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting drainage aggregate
  • Retaining Wall Blocks — Building the wall structure
  • Rubber Mallet — Adjusting block placement
  • Shovel — Adding drainage aggregate
  • Crushed Gravel — Drainage backfill
