What happens here
The hydroponic filtration operates as a two-step process. First, mechanical separation removes detritus (solid waste) from the water column. This pre-cleaned water then enters the hydroponic system where the plants take over the remaining filtration. The water in the entire system is constantly flowing, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Fresh tap water first passes through a 12-part pre-filtration system to remove impurities before it enters a dedicated settling chamber. From there, it's drip-fed into the main sump (a reservoir below the tank), then pumped up to another settling tank. This second settling tank gravity-feeds into the main aquarium. The main tank features a waterfall to aerate the water as it returns to the sump, creating a circular motion of water throughout the system. Any overflow from the main sump is diverted to a nearby wash basin, preventing spills and making maintenance cleaner.
Goal: Maintain continuous, clean water flow through the filtration and aquarium system.
Tools and materials
- 12-part Pre-filtration System N/A — Filtering tap water before it enters the aquarium system
- Main Sump N/A — Reservoir for mechanical filtration and water collection before pumping
- PVC Piping and Valves N/A — Connecting all components of the water circulation system
- Settling Chamber — Initial settling and heating of pre-filtered water
- Settling Tank — Further settling and gravity feeding into the main tank
- Wash Basin N/A — Collecting overflow water from the system
- Water Pump N/A — Moving water from the sump to the settling tank
- Waterfall Structure N/A — Aerating water as it enters the main tank
- Tap Water N/A — Supplying fresh water to the system
