To bypass the softener, you will operate the three valves. First, turn the handle on the inlet valve so it is perpendicular to the pipe, closing it. This stops water from entering the softener. Next, do the same for the outlet valve, turning its handle to be perpendicular to the pipe. This stops water from leaving the softener. Finally, turn the handle on the middle (bypass) valve so it is parallel with the pipe, opening it. This allows the hard water from the inlet side to flow directly to the outlet side, bypassing the softener completely. Your home will now be supplied with normal hard water.
