In this video

Use a flathead screwdriver to turn the drain valve's screw counter-clockwise to open it. To help the water drain, go to a sink inside the house and open a hot water faucet; this will break the vacuum in the lines. Allow about a quarter of the tank's water to drain out, then close the drain valve by turning the screw clockwise.
Goal: Lower the water level in the tank below the anode rod to prevent spillage during removal.
