Begin by determining the desired dimensions for your stair nosing. The video creator prefers to make the entire nosing from a single piece of flooring to maintain consistent grain and texture. Decide on the overhang dimension and the thickness of the nosing; in this example, the overhang is 1 inch. Calculate the total width of the flooring needed by adding the flooring's existing width (3 1/8 inches), the overhang (1 inch), and the thickness of the material that will form the lower return (e.g., another 3/8 inch for a total of 4 1/2 inches). Ensure that the tongue and groove feature of your existing flooring is preserved so that the flooring tongue can be later inserted into the nosing's groove. If you plan to use the same flooring for the stair riser, remember to subtract its thickness from the lower return dimension of the nosing.
