Use a stair tread jig to measure the exact dimensions of each riser. Place the jig on the stair, adjust its arms to fit snugly against the side stringers and the top of the current tread, and then lock it in place. Take the jig to your riser material (e.g., plywood), place the jig on it, and mark the cut lines with a pencil. Repeat this process for each riser, as each stair will likely have slightly different dimensions. Cut the marked riser pieces using a miter saw, carefully aligning the blade with your pencil lines. Label the back of each cut riser with its corresponding stair number and its top edge to maintain organization, as each piece is unique.
