Steps
Measure Tread Depth
5 minutesUsing a tape measure, record the depth of each stair tread. This measurement is from the very front edge of the tread to the face of the riser (the vertical part of the stair). It's crucial to measure this on multiple treads as slight variations can occur.
Watch: Measure Stair Tread and RiserMeasure Tread Width
5 minutesMeasure the width of each tread from one side of the staircase to the other. If your stairs have any nosing (the part of the tread that extends beyond the riser), ensure you are measuring the actual flat surface width, not including the overhang.
Watch: Measure Stair Tread and RiserMeasure Tread Length (or Run)
5 minutesThis measurement is often referred to as the 'run'. Measure from the front edge of the tread straight back to the vertical riser. For treads with a nosing, measure to the back of the nosing where it meets the riser. Ensure consistency across all treads.
Watch: Measure Treads and Mark LaminateMeasure Riser Height
5 minutesMeasure the vertical distance from the top of one tread to the top of the tread directly above it. This is the riser height. It's important to measure this accurately, as riser heights should ideally be uniform for safety and aesthetics.
Watch: Calculate Individual Riser HeightIdentify the Largest Measurements
5 minutesReview all recorded measurements. For ordering new treads, you will need to use the largest measurement for depth and length (run) to ensure they fit all steps, and the largest width measurement. You may need to cut treads to size.
