Step 4 · Drill Pilot Holes

Select a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws you will be using for your chosen hardware. If drilling into a stud, a pilot hole prevents the wood from splitting and makes driving the screw easier. If using plaster anchors, drill holes according to the anchor manufacturer's instructions. Start drilling slowly and steadily, especially through the plaster layer, to avoid chipping or cracking.
