Step 2 · Step 2: Measure Each Tread's Depth (Front to Back)

For every single tread, place your tape measure firmly against the vertical riser at the back. Extend the tape straight across the flat part of the step and over the rounded front edge, which is called the 'nosing'. Keep the tape measure flat and level for an accurate reading. This is a critical step for safety and quality: do not measure over any existing flooring, old carpet pads, or leftover adhesive. Measuring the bare wood ensures your new treads will lie flat and adhere securely, giving you peace of mind.
