Step 3 · Measure the Width of Each Tread

Let's get the width right. For stairs enclosed by walls, measure from wall to wall. For stairs with one or two open sides, measure from the absolute edge of the tread on one side to the edge on the other. Always keep your tape measure parallel to the riser for a true reading. To achieve that classic, design-conscious look, we suggest leaving a small border of wood visible. A one-inch space on each side is a great rule of thumb. For example, if your stair tread is 36 inches wide, a 34-inch wide carpet tread is the perfect choice to bring warmth and elegance while still showcasing your beautiful wood.
