Step 3 · Inspect and Replace the Wax Ring

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

Carefully examine the wax ring that seals the toilet to the floor flange. If it's damaged, cracked, or compressed, replace it with a new, appropriately sized wax ring. Use a putty knife to carefully remove any old wax residue.
