Step 6 · Water the Lawn

After applying the fertilizer, water your lawn thoroughly. This helps to wash the fertilizer granules off the grass blades and into the soil, where the nutrients can be absorbed by the roots. It also helps to prevent the fertilizer from burning the grass. Aim for about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water, depending on your soil type and the temperature.
