Step 2 · Access the Drain Cleanout

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

Locate the main drain line cleanout. This is typically a Y-shaped fitting with a threaded cap, found in the basement, crawlspace, or outside near the foundation of your house. Place your bucket and rags underneath the cleanout opening to catch any wastewater that may spill out. Using a pipe wrench or large pliers, turn the cleanout plug counter-clockwise to loosen and remove it. Be prepared for some water to drain out immediately.
