Step 2 · Check the Pilot Light

Locate the pilot light access cover at the base of the water heater. This is often a small metal plate or a defined opening. You may need to get low to the ground. Use a flashlight to peer through the sight glass or opening into the burner chamber. You are looking for a small, steady, blue flame. If there is no flame, the pilot light is out, which is the direct cause of having no hot water.
