Step 3 · Remove Faucet Handle and Trim Plate

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

First, locate the set screw on the faucet handle. It is often hidden on the underside and requires an Allen wrench for removal. Loosen the screw (you don't need to remove it completely) and pull the handle straight off. If it's stuck, you may need to wiggle it gently. Next, remove the screws holding the large, decorative trim plate (escutcheon) against the wall. These are typically Phillips head screws. Carefully pull the trim plate off, which may have a foam gasket behind it. This will fully expose the valve body and the cartridge you need to replace.
