Step 2 · Shut Off Water Supply and Relieve Pressure

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

Locate the main water shut-off valve for your home. This is typically found in the basement, a utility closet, or near the water heater. Turn the valve handle clockwise until it is fully closed. To ensure the water is off and to relieve any pressure in the pipes, go to the shower you are working on and turn the faucet on. The water should trickle to a stop. It's also a good idea to open a faucet on a lower level of the house (like a basement sink) to help drain the system completely. Some modern shower valves have integrated shut-offs (stops) directly on the valve body, which can be closed with a flathead screwdriver, allowing you to shut off water just to the shower.
