Step 5 · Clean the Copper Pipe

Take a piece of emery cloth or fine-grit sandpaper and thoroughly clean the last inch of the copper pipe stub-out. Rub around the pipe until it is bright, shiny, and completely smooth. This removes any corrosion, old sealant, or small imperfections, ensuring the new ferrule can create a perfect, watertight seal. Wipe away any dust or debris with a clean, dry rag.
