Step 3 · Remove the Old Drain Flange

This is the step most people slow down on. Take it one move at a time — there’s no rush, and you can rewind the clip as many times as you need.

This is often the most challenging step. Insert a specialized drain wrench, such as a Smart Dumbbell or drain key, into the drain opening so it firmly engages with the crossbars of the flange. Attach an adjustable wrench or large pliers to the top of the drain wrench. Apply firm, steady pressure counter-clockwise to unscrew the flange. If it's stuck, do not force it. Instead, apply penetrating oil around the edge and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. You can also use a hairdryer to gently warm the flange, which can help break the seal of old plumber's putty. Once loosened, continue to unscrew the flange until it is completely free from the drain shoe below.
