Step 3 · Step 3: Measure Individual Tread Width

Measure the width of each tread by running your tape measure along the front nosing. If your stairs are enclosed by two walls, measure from wall to wall. If one side is open, measure from the finished edge to the wall. To achieve that elegant, bordered look that showcases your beautiful wood, we recommend a 1-inch setback on each side. For example, a 36-inch wide stair looks stunning with a 34-inch wide tread. This spacing is key to a polished, designer finish.
