Step 3 · Deburr and Clean Pipe Ends

This is the step people usually slow down on. Go finger-tight first, then a quarter turn. No rush — replay the clip whenever it helps.

After cutting, the pipe ends will have sharp edges or burrs. Use a deburring tool to smooth both the inside and outside edges of the cut pipe. This prevents the burrs from slicing or damaging the O-ring inside the push-to-connect fitting. Once deburred, take a piece of emery cloth or fine-grit sandpaper and thoroughly clean the outside surface of the two pipe ends, going back about 1-2 inches from the end. The goal is to remove all oxidation, paint, dirt, and grime, leaving a smooth, bright, and shiny copper surface for the fitting to seal against.
