Step 3 · Isolate the Leak Location
Now that you've confirmed a leak exists, you need to determine if it's inside your house or in the underground pipe leading to it. Locate your home's main water shutoff valve. This is typically found in a basement, crawlspace, or utility room where the water line first enters the house. It will be a lever-handle (ball valve) or a round-handle (gate valve). Turn the valve to the 'off' position. This will stop all water flow into your house. Once the valve is closed, return to the water meter at the curb. Look at the leak indicator again. If the indicator has stopped moving, the leak is somewhere inside your house or in the plumbing fixtures. If the indicator is still spinning, the leak is located in the underground pipe between the meter and the shutoff valve you just closed.
