With the width figured out, let's focus on depth. Measure from the front nose of the step to the back riser at the deepest point of the wedge. Now for a critical safety check: the narrowest part of your tread must be at least 6 inches deep. Next, find the 'walk line'—this is the path most people naturally take, about 12 inches out from the narrowest edge. At this line, the tread depth must be at least 10 inches to ensure a safe footing. Finally, for safety and code compliance, measure the height of your risers; they should not exceed 7¾ inches. A consistent depth is also important; the difference between the largest and smallest tread depth at the walk line should be no more than ⅜ inch greater than the smallest.
