Step 3 · Measure the Straight Stair Treads

Let's measure the standard treads on both flights. For the width, measure from one side of the step to the other. For the depth, it's crucial to measure the entire usable surface: start from the very front of the step's 'nose' (the part that hangs over) all the way back to where the tread meets the vertical 'riser'. Including the nosing is vital for ensuring full coverage and safety. As you measure each step, assign it a number and write it down. Start with #1 at the very bottom of the first flight and continue numbering sequentially all the way to the top of the second flight.
