What happens here
We’re at the PDI facility in St. George, Utah, with racing legend Mark Martin to push the boundaries of luxury performance. His BRAND NEW 2027 Newell P50 motorcoach is barely a week old, but the stock 605HP Cummins X15 won't cut it towing his stacker trailer up mountains with his iconic number 6 NASCAR Ford Thunderbird inside it. We’re performing a complete PDI "Add-a-Turbo" compound turbo conversion to transform this 45-foot luxury rig into the most powerful motorcoach on the road. This deep-dive documents the entire 4-day process working with Mark—from the initial engine bay teardown and plumbing fabrication to the final chassis dyno test that revealed some truly shocking numbers. (19,999 characters)It's just like a race car, ain't just get it fired off that first time. 76 mm inducer on it. Really looking good. It ain't going to stay dirty. We got a little bit of a problem, but we're not going to tell Mark, right? >> Did I cuss on camera? No, I I turned it off before you went off. >> [laughter] >> I should have left it on, that was funny. >> You should have, yeah. I heard hammering and I was like, oh, no, I think Mark's hammering on something. Did you see those numbers? For that power, I would WASH YOUR FEET. >> [laughter] >> MORNING, SIR. How's it going? >> Mitchell. This is Carson. Carson. Nice to meet you. What's your name? Mitchell. Mitchell, pleasure to meet you, Mitchell. Mitchell, Josh. >> you. Josh is major parts man. He gets it all done. Yeah. Whatever. He's going to be bringing us rags and zip ties. Anything you need, you need me. Need a helper and Once I get Once I get greased up and slip back in there into the back So that Mark I'm going to already get you to hand me tools. We did We made good teamwork on the Two hander. >> [laughter] >> Well, in this job, 90% of labor is climbing in and out, so Shove me in there and you just hand me tools so I can do this and that, we'll make it happen. We're hopefully eventually get all this in the back of Mark's coach here, so we have a Lots of chrome, some piping. You know, we got different charge pipes, different radiator pipes that we're going to re-route, the charge air cooler piping, re-route the upper radiator hose piping. And here's our turbo we're going to try to fit in there. This is our PDI stage one turbo. Got a special compressor housing on it, made it made to fit specific to the Nuelle, 76 mm inducer on it, all chromed up. Ceramic coated hot housing, turbine housings on a T6 platform, a 115 AR, works really well with the factory VGT on these coaches, so So it's a compound setup? It's compound setup. Yep. How much power does it make stock and how much power will it make after you're done? >> So, stock this motor was rated at 605 horse to the flywheel. Torque probably about 1850, 1900. When we leave here today, tomorrow, Mark's hoping for 750, 800 horse to the ground. It'll be roughly 850 horse flywheel. And if we're making 2200 ft lbs, we'll be tickled. Hopefully fast enough for Mark. We've had a couple of them built here that ran fair enough. Hopefully don't let him down today, brother. You just took delivery of this thing a couple days ago, didn't you? Yes. Uh this is a first trip. You know, it's got I don't know, less 2,000 mi maybe. Might have more zip ties to cut, but let's just go ahead and set her down right here for now. Yeah, make me a little little bird nest there, bud. Keep digging for access. There we go. That helps. >> [laughter] >> Wow, even the air conditioner compressors painted. Yeah, yeah, man. Every bolt is chrome. Everything is painted. The pulley's painted. The hose clamps are chrome. The horn works. >> [laughter] >> Mark's up there tinkering around. Oh, what is he on the phone with tech support? Poking every button right now. >> Yeah. He's always wide open somewhere. Oh, he is, buddy, right. I think it's about done draining. It's got to be. A little steady drip down in there. What is that sensor going into the inlet there? That is a turbo air inlet temperature sensor. Okay. >> Basically, it just engine just wants to read out of the incoming air into the turbo. It uses that and some other sensors to calculate a discharge temperature. So, as the air air goes in, it's compressed and comes out the discharge and goes to the charge air cooler. Uses that sensor to help calculate the discharge temperature. >> [snorts] >> Do these things work like gas engines where if the IAT gets too hot, it'll pull timing out or Yes. They will. They do pretty good at keeping intake air temperature down, but they will. There is intake air temperature sensors, a few of them, and it'll compensate for all that. So you're pretty familiar with this process by now. This is the third third one. This is the fourth one. Really? Yeah. >> [laughter] >> This is the fourth one. So much greatly improved from the first one, you know, we had to hand make all the pipes, you know, the mount, everything because, you know, the one that they put on the over-the-road uh the mount and all the tubes and stuff, the hood's higher, you know, it hits the big turbo the compound turbo hits the floor of the bathroom. Oh. So they had to hand make a mount to lower it down and hand make all the tubes, charge tubes and all that stuff. So it was a really long hard process and they took uh you know, they had to take the radiator out, which is scary as heck. The thing is so heavy and uh you know, because it comes out the side, but when Jared ordered a coach for himself, he cast all the you know, he made made all the parts and pieces extra parts and pieces ahead of time and so now he's got got the parts cast and stuff and that's what you saw laid out here. And so it should the process should go a little faster. We don't have to take the radiator out anymore cuz you don't have to fit tubes and fabricate, you know, stuff kind of on on the fly. Um it's just really hard to get in there as you can see. It is brutal to get get up in there. So, Carson once he gets himself all up in there, um, he has me handing tools. I've been up in there for several times myself, come out bloody and everything. Clothes ripped and tore [laughter] and stuff. So, it's uh it's brutal to get up there, but it's a lot better than taking the radiator out. Having this this boost it's really mainly for going up hills and mountains cuz you know, the coach is 60,000 lb. Uh, Newell's got the 605 you know, Cummins X15 in them and they do run you know, they do run good uh, in comparison to some of the other, you know, buses on the market, but yeah, the mountains still, you know, I just I couldn't take that 38 mph or 35 mph up some of those mountains out west and I was living out in Montana and so we were always in them, you know, coming and going. So, once you once you start driving, it's like you're so spoiled. It's just hard to go back. If you never had it, you wouldn't know you were missing. I hadn't ceramic coated it yet. Uh, the guys at Newell did the cut and buff and sand and buffed it. But, I had to wait on the on ceramic because I like to use a certain product that I've had a lot of I really like. And there's small areas that still need to be sanded and buffed. And I'm probably going to do those areas while I'm here in my spare time while he's working. I'm going to be a little bit like Mitchell Stapleton. I've seen people do it. So, I should be able to do it, right? I've never I've never done it, but >> Oh, I didn't know that. I figured you were a pro at the cut and buff already. I'm not a you know, I'm a buffer, but I'm not a I haven't done the sanding part of it, but I've watched them do it. So, I you know, and they're I'm talking about small areas. I wouldn't do the back half or those big panels on the side, but uh I'm talking about some small areas that you can't get most people to want to do them because they're tedious. Is this your first uh test buff area? Yeah, I'm probably the mediator for doing this, but I'm going to do it. I've seen them I've seen it done. Surely I can do it. You work with a live audience before? All the time. Really? Make sure this business always has a live audience. You start putting a couple of your throwing nickels in there >> [laughter] >> for every hour you watch me. This show don't come free, man. Yeah, I got to tuck my ears back to get in here, brother. Geez, man. Are you going to get some grease? >> [laughter] >> Coming out with a bit now. Still in the disassembly phase. This is our doser house not our doser house, excuse me. Our NOx sensor housing used to have a a field doser in there as well. This guy's coming out and we put a new cast piece in there which supports the the low pressure turbo that we're going to mount on top of this VGT. So, we're replacing this piece. Looks like you already scratched this. >> [laughter] >> Why? When I and Mark were talking and originating, you know, over a year ago when we started on this coach, I'm like he's like you just build me what you think will look good. And I think it does have the most chrome on it, but it has the most like it's blingy chrome. Like there's so much differences in it that I notice like the front cover plate is a billet piece that we manufactured. That most of them have a a common Zoe piece that's has you know, stamp steel. That's an aluminum piece cut out. And then we you know put the logo number six in it and the PDI logo on it to give it a different interchange. Number six was always my favorite car with Mark, you know, and just being around Mark I took it that that might be his favorite car but I he was so good at so many different cars it's hard to say but I think we did hit a record of the most chrome but you know, I think sometimes you can go too much chrome too. You can have too much without enough color in it but this kind of the way he his brain and our brain works to have the black background it just kind of just it's crazy how well it turned out and then his color that he came up with the gray you know, the coach was sitting out here this morning and I'm like man, I think Mark stole all my colors. It looks like a PDI. That's my favorite color. So when he you know, I love it and I I I I told him this morning I'm like man, the only thing that would be cooler is if there was a CJ4 with the same paint job next to it, you know. I don't know I don't know what I would change. Like it's that it's that rank. Ryan Loeks did a great job. I tried to tell him what I wanted and it just wasn't turning out. Finally I just said just do one and he did that and I was like that's it. >> [laughter] >> So he he he was he was the guy behind it but the engine really is that's Jared's creation. He even wanted to put the chrome valve cover on it even though nobody knows it's chrome but he and I. >> [laughter] >> So you can't really see it but it's it's the next level. I had to come grab you Mitchell cuz we got a little bit of a problem but we're not going to tell Mark, right? It's our secret. We seem to be missing a very important piece to the puzzle. I'm basically at a standstill till we find it but I've got five guys looking for it. If it's around here we're going to find it but But long as Mark's staying busy over there cutting and finishing on his coach, he won't know. But sorry Mark, we'll find it, bud. I'm I'm pretty sure just about anything could happen over there and he wouldn't even see it. He's so He's in the zone over there. >> He's so locked in with his little buffer over there. He'll see what he's doing. >> He's over there. Yeah. Yeah, he's not going anywhere. There's a bracket that supports that. Go ahead and reach in there. See that shiny cast piece back in there? There's a bracket that attaches it to this bracket. And on a new one, they're shorter than our standard Peterbilt Kenworth bracket. They gave me the standard Peterbilt Kenworth bracket and it doesn't fit. So fingers crossed. You just make another one if you have to. Yeah, if I were to cut it and make it look like some farmer fixed it. Ain't [laughter] going to Ain't going to fly. We'll get something to work. I'm not too worried about it, but it's funny in the meantime that he doesn't know the problem I'm having back here right now. If he walks back here, you can just crawl in there. >> Oh, I'll just start banging around. Turn some wrenches. He'll He'll think I'm busy. >> [laughter] >> Do you have your process figured out? I got the process figured out. It's coming along good. A little over halfway done with this strip. That front part came out just like I wanted. A little bit more polishing than than uh than I thought I might have to do, but I'm happy with it. You're going to do the strips under every slide? Yeah. Uh so I've got to finish this one and then I've got a short one and then I got a long one on the other side. You just committed half hour ago, you know. I really should have. I really should have. Yeah. Committed to what? Oh, just pulling this BGT off. It's in the way. Just because I can't get to some radiator clamps up front. Oh. Yeah. You watch SpongeBob? I know why. >> [laughter] >> Cuz it could be like disgusting where it's like several hours later. >> all right. There was one SpongeBob episode. Remember when they had the They found the the cuss words graffitied all over the all over the dumpster behind the Krusty Krab? >> Yeah. And they called them sentence enhancers, not cuss words. >> Yeah. Best episode ever, dude. We pulled the VGT out to make room for me to get in there. Now I've got our charge pipe, which is routed close, buttoned up next to the radiator over there. Mitchell, if you want to sneak in there, you can see it. Don't mind my fingerprints all over it. And then the radiator pipe, which is buttoned up next to the radiator. That's going to allow us room to fit two turbos in here, essentially. Making room. Got to pull stuff apart to put stuff together. It's moving forward in reverse, but moving forward nonetheless, man. Does Mark know about this bracket yet? No. I'm hoping when I start hanging my turbos, I can modify the one that we have. It'll be me and your little secret still. It'll work fine. Good. >> But >> [laughter] >> we're going to make the best of it, dammit, man. We are 4 hours later. I like that. You got to put that in there. I will. 2 days later and there's nothing done, but I'm pulling my hair out. >> Yeah. Used every sentence enhancer you can think of. Sentence enhancers, man. Yeah, there'll be plenty of those. Now you can see what we're trying to shove in there, Mitchell. See that? We found a spot. We found room to make a second turbo, man. >> [laughter] >> It's going to fit. We had secrets, Mitchell. Remember? >> it on the table. I had to I had to get it out of there. >> [laughter] >> I don't know what that is. I don't Where did this come from? We know nothing about it, man. We'll round file that, really. I can't tell where it was or where it came from or nothing, so. I think it's going to fit. Looks great. Yeah, we won't know for sure until we put the the low pressure turbo on there, our turbo we're putting on. Now I got some ducting that goes from charger to charger, we call the intermediate pipe. Charges the VGT. If that fits right, we're going to be okay, but if it doesn't fit right, we're cutting and modifying more. I don't think we're going to. I think it's going to be okay. I don't think you've checked in back here on camera at all since you started. You've been so uh buried in your buffing. Yeah. How's it looking? It's looking good. He uh he's got some big parts on today, so yesterday was getting it all apart and getting, you know, the stuff that's way up in the corner up there, you know, the the radiator tube and the charge air pipe and that's way up there in the corner on and everything. Um which took quite a bit of time, so now that the compound turbo's going on, it's on and the charge pipe from the stock turbo to the compound is on. Carson's on the road. It looks like he's probably almost done with that, so he's putting it back the the alternator and all that stuff back on. Yeah. >> Only got a couple pipes left. Yeah. It looks like down there. It's tedious work just getting everything fitted from the air cleaner to the to the big uh compound, you know, that's a that's quite a act to get that all fitted in there and get the radiator net fitted around all of that and brought around and and hooked. Those are those look like small deals, but they're really tight areas and not easy cuz I've done it. So So although it looks like he's got an hour's worth of work left, he's probably got a half a day or more. Just to get those things buttoned up before he can start putting it back together, but we're definitely ahead of schedule from the other ones we've done because of you know, Jared has the all the people you know, before we were uh fabricating pipes and tubes and brackets a lot of the time. And now he has all that stuff pre-done. Some of it's even pre-cast and everything. So it it's it's going faster. Your turbo's in a hole, man. You know what? I came just about to get in here and I heard hammering and I was like, oh no, I hate person. Hammering on something. He's not happy. That's what I was >> [laughter] >> I was like, well, I if he's hammering on something, it needs to be hit, but He's got total faith in you to beat this Yeah, basically if you're hitting something, you it needs to be hit, but I'm just hoping You're doing good, man. Yeah. My goal is be on the dyno mid-morning tomorrow, man. Wow. I knew you were ahead of schedule here. I didn't feel like I was, Mark. Holy. He He looks like it and if we get on the dyno tomorrow before lunch, I call that ahead of schedule. >> I think we're going to do all right, man. And uh Dude, that's going to be exciting. I'm excited to get over with it. But just making smoke is always exciting. Once you get it all bolted up and Hear it running. Yeah. See it moving. Yeah. Getting all the My favorite part is getting all my fingerprints wiped off the front. You can appreciate that, brother. Yeah. Yeah, you don't have to worry. I'll get them >> [laughter] >> I'll get them dirty on the way home, so I'm going to have to I noticed when I got here that the valve cover was dirty and I was like, "I really need to get in there and rub that valve cover, but I know It don't wait. Yeah. Yeah, the valve cover is going to be a chore to keep It is. You know, but I'm going to get me something like on a on a pole that will wash that. Shout out to like like a one of them uh floor mop to spray the floor. Yes. >> Swiffer thing or Swiffer sweeper. Yes. Get something like that. Zip across the top of that thing. It ain't going to stay dirty. I'm going You got You'll have the tool for the job, man. Yeah, no doubt about it. Yeah. Yeah. What is he trying to figure out? Oh, it's down pipe. Got to get that 4 to 5. The down pipe is yeah. 4-in coming off of the turbo and then then it goes into a 5-in. So, he's got to have an adapter to take the 4-in exhaust pipe to the 5-in. A lot easier to clean when it's off. Oh, yeah. This way it's starting to look like something in there now. Yeah, it is. Really looking good. All right. I got to let my heavy head rest for a second. It's a big old heavy empty head. You guys pulling an all-nighter or what? No. >> [laughter] >> Heck, no, I didn't. We're not that cool. It's like 5:20 and you're still here. I figured you'd be like 4:59 and you're gone. >> We're trying to hit that happy stopping spot. >> Oh. Where's that happy stopping spot, you ask? I don't know. But I think we're about 45 minutes from it. Okay. >> When we're at the 45-minute you hear the wrenches drop. Going home. >> [laughter] Hey. Are we under it? Yeah. Okay, we're good. Not really centered. That's okay. Okay, you want to jack up? Yeah. I need to lift somebody jack. Yeah. We're doing all right, pal. Keep going? Yes, sir. The one that just came off. The bolt pattern is The bolt pattern is wrong. Uh on the I'm going to let you talk to the tech here. Hello, sir. When we go to bolt the module down that contains a differential pressure sensor and everything, the bolts are so far up on the circumference of the can, we can't get we can't bolt the module down to the can because our hose is too short. I don't know if they've ever seen a…
