What’s your favorite paver pattern? #patio

What happens here

Once all pavers are laid, the final steps involve securing them and filling the joints. First, sweep any loose sand or debris off the paver surface. Then, run a plate compactor over the entire paved area. This helps to further seat the pavers into the sand bed, create a uniform surface, and lock the interlock of the pavers. After compaction, generously spread polymeric sand over the entire paver surface. Use a push broom to sweep the sand into all the paver joints until they are completely filled. Make sure to remove all excess polymeric sand from the paver surface, as any residue can harden and create a haze. Finally, lightly mist the entire surface with water according to the polymeric sand manufacturer's instructions to activate the binding agents. This will harden the sand in the joints, preventing weed growth and insect infestation.

Goal: Secure the pavers and create a durable, weed-resistant surface.

Tools and materials

  • Garden Hose with Spray Nozzle — Misting the polymeric sand to activate its binders
  • Leaf Blower — Removing fine dust or debris before wetting the polymeric sand
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the laid pavers
  • Push Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into the paver joints and removing excess
  • Polymeric Sand — Filling and hardening paver joints to prevent weeds and stabilize pavers
