WARNING: don't buy a Yankum recovery rope until you watch this.

What happens here

The presenter questions Alan about using chains for recovery, to which Alan strongly warns against it. Chains and static flat straps are not designed for shock loading; they are a direct cause of serious accidents, including injuries and deaths, when they break and become projectiles. Kinetic ropes, however, are specifically designed to absorb and release energy safely. If absolutely forced to use a chain, it is advised to drape a heavy blanket or jacket over the middle of the chain to help absorb energy and reduce the risk of flying shrapnel if it breaks.

Goal: Understand the safety advantages of kinetic ropes over chains

Tools and materials

  • Chain — Illustrating an unsafe recovery method
  • Heavy Blanket — To be placed over a chain if used, to mitigate projectile risk
  • Kinetic Recovery Rope Yankum Ropes — The safe alternative for dynamic recovery
  • Smartphone iPhone — Communicating with Alan for safety advice

end of the Rope if that doesn't work do it again do it again okay so you are actually telling us to do something that people should not be doing with a chain is that right chain or a static flat strap that's a really good way to break one of those devices a steel chain will store a little bit of kinetic energy but they're not designed to be shock loaded when you shock load a chain you can break them and then they can become projectiles into either the vehicle that's stuck or put the recovery vehicle that you're sitting in now that's a really good point because if that thing does break there have been people that have actually been killed by the parts and pieces flying and the shrapnel hitting people so you don't happen to have a recovery rope but yank them ready to go and you are stuck using a chain please throw something over the middle of that chain a big heavy blanket something so that if that chain breaks it's less likely to go set flying and sailing because the weight of that blanket will actually slow that uh slow that down from flying if if I'm thinking of this thing the right way Alan yeah you always want to know what the working load limit the wll of the equipment you're using make sure that you've got the right size of chain cable uh synthetic winch line flat strap or a kinetic recovery rope know your equipment know the situation you're in slow down pay attention and Recovery situations are Ever Changing as soon as something starts to move or starts there's lots of lots of unknowns that can happen so slow down take your time okay so if I'm completely understanding this correctly if I throw a one inch recovery rope in my pickup truck I can tackle anything I find but if I can't get that big thing let's say I find a stuck semi like you said earlier if I can't get that stuck semi out with my pickup truck and my one inch rope and I need to pull in a bigger piece of recovery equipment that's when I would go to a bigger recovery rope like an inch and a half or a two inch roll so the Rope exactly so the Rope stays with the recovery vehicle not the vehicle that's stuck exactly so if you if you can't get it out with your diesel truck and you've been bouncing on the end of that rope and then somebody shows up with a large backhoe that large backhoe would break that one inch rope okay
