Vintage NASCAR Monte Carlo Build: Dodge R5P7 Engine Install with Doug Richert! (Part 1)

What happens here

The presenter explains the importance of ductwork in directing airflow efficiently to the radiator. He likens it to pouring water from a cup with a round vs. sharp edge; air "sticks" to curved surfaces (Coanda effect). He shows several cardboard mock-ups of ducting components. He made a rough mock-up, then refined it using split pieces of cardboard and tape to create the correct curvature to fit the car's nose and direct air towards the radiator. These mock-ups will then be traced onto aluminum sheets.

Goal: Design and construct internal ductwork to efficiently channel airflow to the radiator for cooling and aerodynamic performance.

Tools and materials

  • Cardboard N/A — Creating mock-ups for ductwork
  • Masking Tape — Assembling cardboard mock-ups
  • Pen/Marker N/A — Marking cut lines on cardboard
  • Scissors N/A — Cutting cardboard
  • Tape Sticks N/A — Reinforcing cardboard mock-ups

to catch you up right now I'm working on the duct work and with the way this Grill is shaped it's not very big you got to make the inside of that a certain way so air actually gets to the radiator and I'll explain to you how that works but now I'm making this top piece that will go inside here fit this curve and instead I could make it all out of one piece it needs to curve up because when the air goes in it's going to follow the curved surface to the top of the radiator where if I just made it straight it's going to you know tumble around in there it's much more efficient to have it curve same thing with the bottom there's going to be a piece in here that goes like that and sort of points the air at the bottom of the radiator it'll stop about here and then just cut back this way cuz there's going to be a little opening in the bottom too but it's interesting if you think about it like if you're trying to pour water water out of a cup and the cup has a round Edge and you pour it and it just goes everywhere that's cuz the water is rolling out down around that lip and you know rolling down the cup and off the bottom where if you got a cup that has a sharp edge you can pour it and it comes off nice and crisp the air does the same thing and that's basically the concept we're working on here I've made a couple versions of
