Vintage NASCAR Cars With Modern Horsepower: Aaron Brown's “Garage Shop” Custom Creations!

What happens here

For vehicles intended for extreme speeds, such as land speed record attempts, specialized drivetrain components are engineered and integrated. This includes custom-built quick-change rear ends, which are critical for fine-tuning gear ratios at Bonneville. The process involves reverse engineering existing high-performance parts (e.g., Don Ferguson's original quick-changes), scanning them, and then re-engineering them for CNC production to achieve superior precision and efficiency (up to 97%). These components are designed to work seamlessly with multi-speed transmissions (e.g., 7-speed Liberty transmissions) to deliver optimal power to the wheels.

Goal: Develop and assemble high-efficiency, specialized drivetrain systems for high-speed racing.

Tools and materials

  • 3D Scanner — Digitizing existing mechanical parts for reverse engineering and design modification
  • CNC Machining Services External Service — Manufacturing precision drivetrain components from scanned and re-engineered designs
  • Quick-Change Rear End Custom — Allowing rapid gear ratio changes for specific race conditions and maximizing drivetrain efficiency
  • Ring and Pinion Gears Gleason — Critical components within the rear end, custom-made to exact specifications for optimal performance

What they say

packed away somewhere else. Yeah, there's always some. Actually, this is the rear end that we're going to be putting into the pro mod. And if you notice something different about it, it's a quick change. Uh we work with Don Ferguson out California. and they had built the original hand machined the original ones, original center sections for these quick changes for the speed demon and the streamliner. And so we were just going to buy one from him. Well, he didn't want to build them anymore. So we bought the right, you know, scans. So we took his rear end, scanned it, re-engineered it with all the tolerances for CNC instead of the hand machining. Uh had Gleon make the make the ring and pinion. every all the specs were done here between uh Jeff Horton, Spencer, and uh you know, Fuzzy and them. So, they put all this together. They take this the 10-speed Liberty transmission to Indianapolis to ARC and the whole package 97% efficient. It's only losing 3%.
