Compact and Fill Joints with Polymeric Sand

What happens here
After all pavers are laid and edge restraints are in place, the entire paved surface needs to be compacted. Use a plate compactor (ideally one with a protective rubber pad to prevent paver damage) to go over the entire area, ensuring the pavers are firmly seated into the bedding sand. This helps to level the surface and create interlock. Immediately after the initial compaction, sweep polymeric sand (or fine, angular sand) evenly across the entire surface. Work the sand into all the joints using a stiff-bristled broom. Once the joints are filled, compact the surface again to settle the joint sand deeply into the gaps between pavers.
Goal: Stabilize pavers and lock them in place with jointing sand
Tools and materials
- Leaf Blower — Clearing excess polymeric sand from the paver surface before wetting
- Plate Compactor with Rubber Pad — Vibrating pavers into the bedding sand and settling joint sand
- Stiff-Bristled Broom — Sweeping joint sand into the paver gaps
- Polymeric Sand — Filling paver joints to lock them in place and inhibit weed growth
