What happens here
The new cutting edge is made from Ultra-High Molecular Weight (UHMW) polyethylene. This material is fed as large sheets into a KOMO CNC router, which uses a vacuum table to securely hold the plastic in place. The CNC machine is programmed with the precise dimensions and bolt hole locations (as measured in the previous step) to custom-cut the cutting edge components. The machine operates at high temperatures, and safety barriers are in place around the vacuum pumps and cutting area.
Goal: Manufacture the new cutting edge components from UHMW using a CNC router.
Tools and materials
- Forklift — Moving large sheets of UHMW plastic to the CNC machine
- KOMO CNC Router — Precision cutting of UHMW material
- Safety Barriers — Protecting personnel from high temperatures and moving machinery
- Vacuum Pumps — Securing the UHMW sheets to the CNC table during cutting
- UHMW Polyethylene Sheets May Wes — The raw material for the new cutting edge
