What happens here
This project details the process of clearing overgrown land on a farm, involving the burning of large brush piles, utilizing heavy machinery for fire management, felling small trees with a chainsaw, and bucking larger fallen logs into manageable pieces. The goal is to transform an overgrown area into usable pasture land.

(13,735 characters)hey folks this is Josh Tony rich farmer welcome to the farm blog today today we're gonna be burning brush so we've got several brush piles on the farm that we've been needing to burn it rained for like the last three days we finally got a dry spell it got windy yesterday which dried this pile out we've got a heavy frost last night so everything around is soaking wet we've called the county we've done a burn permit we've also called the fire department and let them know we're burning and we're gonna light this big pile up and probably light another big pile up on the farm so come along today we're just getting some chores done we'll be cutting some wood and burning some stuff and having some fun all right [Music] this pile has been sitting here for about a year and a half if you missed the video it's right here we had a forestry mulcher come up here and mulch these trees down there are a bunch of cedar trees out in the middle of this pasture right here and this is just all part of taking back land from the farm one tree in here is storm debris that we got up I guess two days ago or something like that my volunteer guy have a friend that comes and volunteers his name is Steve he came up here and used the tractor for the first time so you'll get to see that video too but we're gonna go ahead and light this guy up I think according to rednecks specifications I'm supposed to have a cigarette in my hand and a can of gas but that ain't happening so we've got it lit inevitably the wind is gonna pick up it always does as soon as you light a fire I don't know if the fire creates the wind or what so what I'm getting at is we set the woods on fire right back here probably six months ago when we were burning I got to move the Gator it's getting a little close this thing is gonna go up really fast hopefully I can get you a cool time-lapse this is a stressful time on the farm I worry about the fire getting out so I've got to basically stay up here with it and keep an eye on it now what you need to know about a fire like this is initially it will go up really really fast then it's going to settle down it's gonna kind of smolder for several days so I just wanted to kind of give you a little education on how a fire like this will burn in case you're clearing land for yourself the fire will initially go up and it sends a lot of embers up in the air if the wind is blowing it can carry those things like a mile so you really got to pay attention to what you're doing you got to light it at the right time daybreak is normally the best time around here where I live because there's a lot of dew on the ground so you don't have that fire spreading danger so I'm gonna sit here I'm going to babysit this fire for probably two more hours and then I'm going to go get the chainsaw and start clearing up some stone debris we've got a lot of trees down on the farm when I say a lot I mean upwards of 200 trees are down on the farm so there's a lot of work to be done and we have fences going in sometime in mid-december so tornado wire that's the company that we're going with for our fences and we'll give you a whole lot more detail on that but I just got to babysit this fire for a little while and we'll have some fun with the chainsaw clearing up some more brush and I'll take you around I'll show you some of the trees that are down and some of the stuff we got to get done here it's just a farm chore day it's not a miraculous day where you're gonna learn so much but I'll try and put some tidbits in there so hopefully you're clearing land on your property you'll know what to do all right be sure and stay tuned to the end of the video after the credits we'll go into a little more detail of why we didn't chip up this pile right here in other words turn it into mulch and put it back to the land will kind of explain that to you a little bit at the end of the video all right let's talk about the fun part of earning this pile so you can see half the pile really hasn't caught up so we've got the wicked 55 grapple from everything attachments we're going to get in here and we're going to plow this stuff up basically just keep piling it up until the pile is gone I'll probably have to park the tractor somewhere over here and come back in the morning and keep turning this for a couple days until it burns all the way away to nothing so let's have some fun with the track [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so a few things you need to know about pushing up a big pile like this don't do this your first time using your tractor it can be very dangerous okay you can getting that fire there are flammable hydraulic hoses there are flammable materials pushing right up into the fire see you got to be very careful don't do this the first time you use your tractor but the ultimate goal here is to get these larger logs up on top of the pile so that they'll actually burn this thing will get hot enough to burn huge logs but it won't get that hot unless you can turn it up on top of itself so if we didn't have this tractor we didn't have this grapple these piles would be burning for weeks and weeks and weeks and I'd just be over here trying to push it in some other kind of way I don't know if I'd get a snow plow or what this thing is a huge huge help on the farm especially when you're clearing land when you're getting that brush storm debris and stuff like that you can see that fire is whipping now nice we're here burning the malware ticker stuff over in this field this field is basically the furthest point from our house I don't pay attention to it too much but I've got a cherry tree here that's sitting on top of a gigantic rock and we're gonna go in we're gonna dress up that cherry tree while we're here while we've got the opportunity to burn the brush I'll show you what we're doing guys I might look ridiculous and all this safety gear but I tell you what I made a deal with myself that I always wear safety gear when I'm running my chainsaw and the reason I'm doing this is because I met a guy who lost an eye and he had all the safety gear on that reminded me use your safety gear so I have my helmet and my chaps on so if you think I look ridiculous that's fine I'll still have my leg and I'll still have my eyeballs cool this tree has three branches coming off of it three main branches coming out of the ground what I want to do is lighten it up a little bit and give one main branch the opportunity to grow into a beautiful tree and get rid of all the scraggly myths that surround it so what we're gonna do is leave the healthiest one we're gonna limit up we're gonna get everything ready and then we'll come over here with a grapple grab it take it across the field to the burn pile cool [Music] [Applause] so while a wild Cherrytree like this is a beautiful tree I think you can tell I did it some good it's widely regarded as a weed around here where I live so don't feed your goats wild cherry limbs that are dead or it will kill them just a little something so I guess this vlog can be educational we've got another tree down over here I'm gonna go ahead and run over while I've got the song warmed up and cut that thing up - so we're riding over here on the Gator - some trees that I have down on the edge of the field we'll take you over we'll just show you what's going on this is a small tree I'll turn the camera around so this tree behind me is fairly insignificant but what we've got to do is cut it into sections that are big enough at where we can get it out of the field right here when we build our fence our fence is going to come right down through here on the edge of the woods and shoot right down through here and down into the woods over there so basically I need to be thinking about any leaners that I might have any trees that are leaning toward the fence line and I need to go ahead and take care of those so at some point we'll walk around and we'll drop all the leaner trees and we'll get them out of the way we'll probably have another big fire over on this side of the farm I'm gonna start knocking this stuff out I'll take you around the other side of the farm where we've got some bigger trees some nice substantially sized Oaks and hickories that are down all this damage came from hurricane Michael and what we had here was just a swirling wind here on the farm so some of the trees that we kept behind after we cut timber like this guy and like those big ol Oaks back there some of them held up and some of them did not hold up at all so we'll take you around will show you those real quick [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right let's go to the other side of the farm well I said let's go to the other side of the farm but first let's go to the front yard this is the tree that took our power out for four days or so I'll show you so this is a pretty large hickory tree and I'll show you a little bit there's the brush I've gotten a little bit of the brush so the power company came and just cut it off of their power lines and put our power line back up but what I've got to do is cut it into sections and what I want to do with this we're gonna have a portable sawmill guy come out and cut some timber here for us so cut us some lumber out of some of these windfall trees so I'm gonna basically get them all together get them in a big pile and I'm gonna cut this big stuff and it doesn't look that big until I get over here on it let me show ya pretty significant that's a pretty significant sized tree I'm gonna say it's throwing through about 16 inches or so so we'll be able to get two cuts off of this long tree right here it's basically two 16-foot cuts we'll be able to get two cuts out of this tree so we'll cut it up in preparation for making some lumber with it so something to consider is this root ball may try and stand back up as we're cutting this tree up so we got to really be cognizant of that at the very least that root ball is going to try and tip up like that so as we cut the tree we'll start from the top of it and work our way down [Music] now I think you can see what I mean about it raising back up on that stump this affords us the opportunity to get down out of the dirt with our log but you can see it raised up when we go to cut down here that stump is going to try to stand almost straight back up you can see it raised up a good five and a half feet from when I cut this log right here so something to be aware of if you're cutting the tree on a stump like this be aware that stumps gonna try and move with you a little bit so what we'll do with this next cut down at the base of the tree we're gonna go in underneath and take a little cut probably cut about that deep and then we'll go in on the top and that way hopefully it'll just drop right off this is gonna make some awesome awesome lumber I cannot wait to have it cut up it's gonna be pretty cool and I'm really digging my MS 3:11 still good stuff good stuff so let's get to work here this is gonna be the last log we cut on today's vlog so we'll go ahead and drop this we'll go back over we'll check the fire one more time the fire last time I checked it was probably I guess it was probably as big as a house before when we first got started and now it's probably about nine ten by ten little area we'll go back over there we'll stir that one more time and we'll cut this log so let's have some fun let's drop this big boy [Music] we come over here to get it with the tractor we'll but this log off and this stump will go and stand right back up no need for no gym time today good stuff I didn't think I'd be able to kick that thing over like that let's go check on the fire real quick that huge pile is now down to a little bit of rubble so what I'll do is kind of push this up one more time right now I'll come back about the time the Sun Goes Down push it up one more time I'm actually gonna go hunting so I'll probably come back after the Sun Goes Down push it up one more time and then we'll do it one more time in the morning and that should get it pretty cool guys thanks a lot I hope you enjoyed spending the day with me here on the farm this is just what's going on clearing land cleaning up brush and having fun alright we'll see you next time found that like button subscribe to the channel and hope to see you again [Music] we had some ways supposed to be stone Tyrion so you made it through the video let's discuss why we didn't ship this up and put it back to the land simply put economics we cannot afford a $200,000 wood chipper I cannot pay $500 for three days or a week or so of having a chipper up here and work chipping this brush up for the benefit of the soil the benefit that it's going to provide to the soil does not outweigh the financial burden that it places on you to chip this kind of stuff now in certain areas of the country you can chip hole stumps you can chip all sorts of stuff but as big as this stuff is I can't chip it I could get out here and work for days and days and days and have a pile of chips about this high and about this big around it's just not financially worth it so we're burning it so some of you might be worried about the environmental concerns of burning burning has been going on since the dawn of time Nature's Way of cleaning the land is burning and as we populate the world we have less and less burning you think about it the Serengeti probably catches on fire once a year and burns off all those weed seeds and burns off all those invasive species nowadays we try to control fire so if the forest catches on fire out in Colorado we try to put it out we spend billions and billions of dollars trying to protect homes not trying to save the forest but trying to protect homes burning is a part of nature
