This is the process we like to use. Simple, strong and effective!

What happens here

Determine the precise height and horizontal position for your floating shelf on the wall. It is critical to locate and mark the wall studs, as the lag screws must be driven into these for adequate structural support. Once the stud locations are marked, use an impact driver or drill to securely drive long lag screws into the wall studs. Ensure the screws are driven deep enough to be firmly seated but leave enough shaft protruding to fully support the shelf. After the lag screws are installed, use a reciprocating saw (or hacksaw) to carefully cut off the heads of the screws. This leaves smooth, cylindrical metal rods extending from the wall, which will serve as the hidden floating brackets for the shelf.

Goal: Drive lag screws into the wall at the planned shelf locations, ensuring they hit studs, and then cut off their heads to form the hidden floating brackets.
