What happens here

After the main patio base and initial paver work are underway, focus on constructing the integrated paver steps and landing leading to the house. Similar to the patio, ensure a compacted gravel base for the steps. Build the step risers using retaining wall blocks or pre-fabricated step units, laying each course onto a level base and securing layers with construction adhesive. The video shows grey paver steps with rounded edges. As highlighted in the video, 'lights all mounted up underneath there,' suggesting the incorporation of low-voltage LED strip or puck lights beneath the step treads. This requires carefully routing low-voltage wiring and installing fixtures as each step is built, ensuring connections are weatherproof. Once the steps are built, lay the pavers for the landing area, ensuring it integrates seamlessly with the house and the main patio.

Goal: Build stable, aesthetically pleasing, and illuminated paver steps and a connecting landing.

Tools and materials

  • Level — Ensuring each course of steps and landing pavers is level
  • Rubber Mallet — Gently tapping blocks and pavers into place
  • Wet Saw — Cutting paver blocks and landing pavers for precise fits
  • Construction Adhesive — Securing layers of blocks together
  • Low-Voltage LED Lighting Components — Providing integrated lighting for the steps
  • Low-Voltage Wire — Connecting lighting fixtures to the transformer
  • Pavers — Creating the walking surface of the landing
