What happens here

This video provides an in-depth review and rigorous torture test of the new Arctic Razor Back snowplow, specifically designed for pickup trucks. It covers the product's development history, innovative features borrowed from existing Arctic snow management solutions, its compatibility with Western WideOut mount systems, and detailed engineering aspects like greasable pins and modular design for easy repair. The video culminates in extreme testing scenarios, including hitting curbs and obstacles at speed, to demonstrate the plow's durability and the effectiveness of its trip-edge system.

the first is gonna we're gonna do the walk around with these guys and then we're gonna beat the [ __ ] out of these plows we're off to arctic's corporate headquarters to test a new snow plow dirt monkey stuff like when you hit it basically we are going to spend hours beating the crap out of this trying to find his failure point it hits harder going bass backwards than it does going forward all right you guys I am inside arctic's headquarters and I'm actually with the development team on a brand new snow plow that is coming up we've got Lucas hey what's going on guys Lucas what do you do with these guys I usually I say my name first while you say it but I'm the vice president Nick Nick I'm a mechanical engineer here I'm Blake Blake uh Chief mechanical engineer and one of the co-owners okay the plow that we're going to be looking at today is based on a very similar design to what you guys may be familiar with it's a snowplow that Arctic has been building for 28 years over 28 years and they have over 20 000 units out in the field being ran right now but now you have made this specifically for a pickup truck yeah so like everything we make we manufacture it for our own use and then we're going to put it through a series of tests for years now like you said it's been five years since we initially developed the product okay so so five years ago was your first prototype that came out yes and you guys built this for yourself we built it for ourselves and we knew right away that it was something that we had to go full head on into because of how well it worked and how enjoyable it is to use and now this is Gen 3. this is generation three yeah so this thing has completely changed from when you and Blake and Nick started this process five years ago yes and it's very similar but there's a lot that Blake has done over the years to make a difference so and we're gonna go over all of the differences but I want to know what did you guys do to it out in the field how did you test it so like everything which we don't recommend our end users doing we're going to be striking obstacles that you'll find in a parking lot we're going to be using it Beyond what we recommend to doing and that's like saying okay we're gonna go hit parking blocks we're gonna go plow at 45 miles an hour we're going to strike off wait a minute we plowed with us on the road at 45 miles an hour it was a close course okay and striking obstacles at 20 miles an hour it's like outside normal use you wouldn't want to do that on a pickup truck because your plow is not going to last very long so you were just doing it to see what part would break yes we see where are the failure points okay yep and then you take those failure points that was gen one then you go to gen two and then you keep perfecting it to we came up with what we're looking at right here yes which looks very similar to the Snow White to the snow wing and to the Arctic Sectional because you're borrowing tried and true technology if it ain't broke don't fix it kind of a mentality exactly okay so Bowl boards very similar we use the same polyblocks as we do on our pushers okay and then obviously the wings are very similar to the snow wing all of that again tried and true pre-production unit you're looking at here generation three over the five years we've changed a lot and learned a lot okay and you said Blake has been changing this thing over the course of these years so Blake can you tell me exactly what makes this specific for a truck now instead of a piece of equipment yeah between the snow wing and this the biggest change is making it lightweight but physically would be the mole board okay the shape of the mole board it's got a different radius a different shape overall our normal board The Cutting Edge would be in line with the top of the mow board now we've kicked the bottom back rolled the front more forward for better snow rolling and also different angle of attack for different scraping and higher speed okay so you designed it so that you could plow with this this thing faster basically that's what it sounds like to me yes you didn't really change the puck system in the back no it still uses our standard sectional design and the concept of being a sectional okay now as I look look at this these are the same wings that are on the snow Wing um no no same design attempt but they have a different function okay they now fold all the way back for transporting out a truck and then they come out to this 45 degree angle scoop position for them okay so they don't go to a 90 degree they go to a 45 what is the dimensions on the snowplow now as I look at it over there yep in transport mode from wingtip to wingtip we're at eight foot six okay and right here full scoot mode tip is 10 foot 10 inches 10 foot 10. and I'm seeing a western Mount system behind it yes this is our what we call the Razorback is an aftermarket retrofit of the worst with the Western whiteout okay so if I'm understanding this correctly you can actually a guy that has a western whiteout doesn't have to change a thing no he can come up to this plow hook up to it right down to the controller without touching a single thing that they do without a single thing all he has to do is disconnect his Hydraulics from his Western blade unpin his A-frame and the chain pull off pull up to ours hook all that back up and it works with all of that fully integrated everything no wiring nothing as if so if they have a western whiteout is just about an hour or two you can have yours off have this on up and running point out some of the details that these guys might know like the fact that you had this done by a gun boring shot our longer pins are drilled by a gun board driller okay so that this grease pathway goes all the way through the pin and then there's cross holes show that every hinge same with our trip hinges um zinc coated pins zinc coated hinges so that they're not going to grow together and also they have that grease there for extended wear life okay um all the other pins that operate Hydraulics or the main pin are the same deal through hole drilled with cross holes you can see here all one Grease Circ operates all the greasing for that so those eight hydraulic pins four hinge pins and one main pin and then the pins that hook up to the actual actual Western Ultima 2 are greased as well so really what you're saying without saying it so these guys understand is they put the grease gun here not here here yeah exactly this is one pump one pump get her done gets it done it's actual controller is a less Western control yes it is so even the controller doesn't change doesn't change all right can we can I can I raise this can I run this real quick [Music] so up is up some full angles this button makes both Wings go back this one gets both Wings going forward [Music] hit it once you're left your driving swing goes back hit it again same button it goes forward same with the other side so if you're familiar with this controller then you're going to be very familiar with how to run this snow patrol operate the same as a western whiteout because in true nerd fashion you went all the way to the back Mr perfectionist can't be good with doing what's got to be done up front we get a big red bumper guard back here Blake talk to me about this thing why do we have this basket we have a weight balance kit it's adjustable but the intent of this is to get the truck working as a package as efficient as possible your factory rate distribution for example on this truck is 56 front 44 rear when you put just the plow on you're at 70 front 30 rear and that's with any blow that's with any plow any plow out there yep and so you weren't okay with that no it kills your front tires uh overweight your front axle and you have no traction in the rear so you have to plowing four-wheel drive which once again because your front axle so what we did is we want to shift that weight back to the rear and doing this with the weight that you put on we're at a 61 front 39 rear ballast so we're almost Factory ballast now almost back to normal and if you wanted to you could add more weight gonna go up to 1300 pounds and be perfectly Factory balanced if we wanted to if you wanted to so that makes the axles not overweighted and it makes the truck handle like it was designed from the factory just with more weight so the balance will be where you need it you're gonna have a lot more traction while plowing okay Nick I have a question for you yeah well now as I'm looking at this ballast kit is this got a be sold specifically with this plow or can it can they be sold separately or what's the scoop with that yeah so they're definitely sold separately so if you have another vendor's plow you want to add the ballast kit you can do that or if you have our plow and let's say you got a spreader in the back of your truck don't need the ballast kit makes perfect sense for you it can be completely independent so it that's not a requirement and it does not come with it it's just the way that Mr perfectionist wants to have that done because that's what Lucas was telling me he's a total perfectionist and I'm starting to see that but that's good for you guys because then you're getting the best possible thing so let's go over this one is actually going to be mine right here so if you guys are familiar with your uh Ultra Mount 2 we're reusing the the lights from the Western is reusing it so your hookup screen will use the undercarriage is being used right so even frame is hard okay sorry oh this A-frame yes so you think it's important to note um you know Ultra Mount 2 is a great product it hooks up easy the wiring's figured out mechanics know how to work on the Hydraulics they know how the pump works but we also have to say this is not a product affiliated with Western and it's not endorsed by Western we found a mount that we like that worked really well had all the ports we needed to make the plow work and in all of our testing it's been fantastic okay and it this isn't Western though this is your own design oh we had to put our flare on it okay okay we'll be riding around with an Arctic you want people to know and you like knowing okay I'd like to take this outside and start to beat the hell out of it does that sound like a good game plan about time let's head out [Music] we're gonna jump ahead a little bit in this video and show you what this snowplow looks like once it gets to a point of failure for hours we hit this against curves at different speeds against different obstacles different angles smacking it over and over again and now once we've got it to a point of failure let's see what that looks like so this is a jam small bar so this is what happens when you hit her at 20 miles an hour how do we fix that now I'm going to just go up to a curb and just pop it out from the right side okay let's just see how that works doing their job not even breaking that's a that's that's beautiful right there I like so make sure we get that in there all right guys we are going to be torture testing a brand new snow plow you can't tell what we're going to be doing to it we're not this is the beginning this is not the end [Music] now we're gonna back this video up and start to show you what it took to finally get it to this point it hits harder going bass backwards than it does going forward that's the actual Western undercarriage hitting right yeah yep that's the undercarriage that's not actually the plow all right so we're gonna hit straight up can you see all right Blake yeah Center you can see all right let's do it ready when you are now a normal guy hitting a curb that fast will be eating their steering wheel and putting their head into a windshield and if I would if this was a normal plow I would be laying in front of the snow stormed off like a [ __ ] Bronco [Music] thank you uh I just want these guys to feel how how it feels hitting a curb how fast are we gonna go uh about 15-20 miles per hour okay let's do it okay let's go [Music] okay let's just go up and down and see what it looks like okay hold up okay from the back side let's check it out okay so that magic is right here okay one more time please let's see what it looks like when you hit it on the center how that actually operates man it's not snowing but it's cold all right up and down again just up and down just keep going [Applause] don't hit this curve don't hit the screw bam you hit that curve and then it just like jars the hell out of you and your your nerves are just on edge for the rest of night while you're cleaning curves because that's what sucks the most in a pickup cleaning the curbs back dragging out all the lot yeah you just hit that curb and if you hit it right and the trip Edge doesn't work oh my God you like shift over six inches and you slam into the window like yeah you hit yeah you hit the steering wheel with your your feet you face plant your skin willing to it I would plow with the window down sometimes and I'm doing curb work just in case I didn't see it and I hit it because I hit my head on the window before but with this like I don't worry about that it's on the way maybe to a point of a fault because then if you really stop paying attention yeah you're gonna hit something with the truck so you know calm down but yeah it's like a different mentality when using this thing I love it I love clowning a truck with this plow versus like my other plow and I would you know what we did that it's not like two weeks ago I was clearing the front of our shop because all the salt trucks were leaving the um maintenance facility and they are unloaded so they can't get through the snow so I was plotting with the F-550 with a whiteout and I just again it brought me back like I hate this I don't want this go give me a skid steer I don't have one they're all in the field I don't have the skid steer to use I'm like so is that why you built this in the first place yeah like that was every because we're like I love climate sectional you don't have to worry about it and with the traditional stuff like that's all you worry about it's just hit and stuff and if you do it usually destroys the plow like we were going like we didn't want to own the white outs when they came out because guys will wear the plows down the edges and then they'll hit a curb with the wing and it doesn't have like enough trip Edge functionality anymore because your leverage has been reduced so it just destroys the link and then uh I think the guy's name is Chuck he had like this vintage F250 who is gorgeous and he had a brand new Fisher XLS on it and two years later he destroyed the plot because Fisher is a trip Edge trip and so basically if you hit anything with the wings the pop has no ability to trip over and he destroyed it and that and so you guys decided to build a better plow because of you went through a a plow after plow after plow and you decided you could build a better mousetrap yeah and because it's not always me behind the wheel like us behind the wheel on the wheel truck were experience we're not going to break something we're we're cognizant we're aware you put a guy in that's not as experienced or an employee that really doesn't care about the equipment yep okay you're gonna ruin a ten thousand dollar plot right and that was like when my dad made a sectional he's like oh I don't have to worry about ruining a plow anymore my operators I don't have to worry as much because they can't destroy the cloud they can't complain but you're talking about when you originally started to build your Arctic Sectional pushers for your loaders that's why you built them because you got sick of people destroying your own plows yeah yeah so you built the original ones for yourself and then you guys decided to build the plow a plow version for yourselves yes yeah just to make sure that we're all on the same page we have changed the speed of some parts of this video so that you can just see it a little bit better like this now although we have used the entire snowplow we really concentrated a lot of our torture testing on the left driver's side wing and the center section of the mold board just to see if we could get a very specific failure and what that would look like [Music] I don't know what else we could hit I don't know what else we can do if you guys uh got more ideas put it in the comments down below we'd love to hear what you guys think of this plow um and make sure you hit thank you because you're gonna see my truck with one of these on it and action hopefully yet this winter Mother Nature hopefully blesses us with snow and I hope wherever you guys are you get blessed with if you want snow abundance though if you want something else I hope you get it I hope you at least got entertained and got informed that's what I try to do with this channel I try to take things to the level where it helps you really understand and be confident in what you're doing um so I hope you appreciate the effort that goes into these because I appreciate you guys just clicking that watch button and hitting that thumbs up it does go a long way um we are never done we're gonna go down this slope and we're just gonna watch this articulate with the slope so that we can see how it Contours it's kind of an important feature when it comes to snow plows beating this thing for well the entire day yeah we spent the whole day hitting this hitting this against blocks hitting against curbs taking it over but what happens if somebody actually does damage something I mean what happens if we we rip a wing what happens then yeah of course so we we designed it to last but we understand people are going to break things all of our products are modular and designed to be replaced at the component level if you break this Wing you can take it off at the frame put a new wing on if you break this hinge you can take this hinge off put a new hinge on it if you break just this front part of the way you can take that and put a new one on you could so you can unbolt like this Wing right from here exactly and physically remove that so it's not that's the design intent of it okay to be serviceable so it's a it's a very easy the entire thing can any one section is exactly if you actually break a mole board you can replace that we've even had people have about frames and we'll send them an entire frame and they'll put all the other components on it so you'll pull all these components off and you'll just send them this Frame exactly and then they can both make sense makes sense well thanks for letting me come out and invade your space Blake thanks Lucas much appreciated thanks Nick absolutely all right guys well that's calling it for this video but make sure you hit that subscribe button because my Ford has now got the new Razorback on it and I actually have snow so I'm gonna take it to where we have snow and we're going to start plowing it unlike these poor guys which have nothing but Bare Grass and water in their yards so make sure you hit that subscribe button and come back and check it out in action God bless go get em you guys we'll catch you on another one okay the plow on this bright has a big deflector so one of my questions comments and concerns was how's the truck gonna handle the heating right and right where we want her to be perfectly in the middle every everything seems to be going just fine and I'm not just pulling the I got the plow on I also got the trailer on with the snow wing and the counterweight kit I got a pretty big load on this truck and this plow is not deflecting the air and it's still breathing okay that's one of those things where I've hooked up new plows and had them overheat instantly not having this issue in any way shape or form
