The things you get excited about as an adult…

What happens here

Once the excavation and rough grading are complete, a robust sub-base layer of crushed stone or gravel (often referred to as 'basing') is laid. The video briefly shows areas that have already received this stone base, indicating its presence. This layer provides stability, distributes the load from the paving, and aids in drainage. The stone should be spread evenly and then thoroughly compacted using a vibratory roller or plate compactor to achieve optimal density. The thickness of this base depends on the expected traffic load.

Goal: Install and compact a stable crushed stone sub-base for the parking lot

Tools and materials

  • Skid-Steer Loader with Bucket — Spreading the crushed stone evenly
  • Vibratory Roller — Compacting the stone base to achieve required density
  • Crushed Stone/Gravel N/A — Creating the sub-base layer for the parking lot
