The NASCAR Dynasty Everyone Forgot: Burt Myers Family Garage

What happens here

Burt Myers introduces the racing legacy of his family, starting with his grandfather, Billy Myers, who won the first race on the paved Martinsville Speedway. He introduces his father, Gary Myers, and notes his cousin, Chocolate Myers, was Bobby Myers's son. He points out a trophy from 1956 won by Billy Myers and highlights that his family is the only one in the racing field to use Ford engines, while others use Chevrolet. He also mentions that his son, Slate, and brother, Jason, also race, with the family currently fielding five cars per week at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Goal: Understand the multi-generational racing history of the Myers family.

What they say

Hide

Burt Myers' grandfather won the very first race on a paved Martinsville Speedway and his grandson, third generation racer Burt, is in this field today. >> Chocolate is my dad's first cousin. He was Bobby's son. When I was growing up, this wall wasn't here. And he kept his Grand National, which was cup car, in here. >> You don't know where you keep all your tools. All your walls are full of trophies. >> Yeah, >> [laughter] >> well. >> You could see that. >> thing we don't complain about is room for trophies. Me and my brother Jason and my son Slate run all of them in a race season. Me and Slate are the only two for the last 2 years that have run all of them in a race and all the smart races. That's why you kind of see so many cars in here. This is Slate's. The four with the white four is Slate's smart car. This car over here is my smart car. And then these one, two, three are the Bowman Gray cars. We got two more down there. So >> [laughter] >> Is that a D3 Ford? >> What is that? >> a D3 Ford? >> Yeah, they have yet to make the It's a C3, excuse me. It's a C3 Ford. The D3 Ford is not legal yet. >> Oh. >> They won't They won't approve it yet. So, the D motors I had a D motor, they told me I could run, and then changed their mind. So, I swapped it out, traded a guy for a C motor. >> How the heck do you use that much power at Bowman Gray? >> Uh well, to be honest with you, it's funny cuz Ricky Rudd came over one time. George Gable, who used to build our motors years ago for Roush Yates, him and Ricky were tight back in the day cuz he built the motors whenever Ricky was in the 10 car. Ricky came over one morning and he couldn't believe it. He said, "How?" Cuz we run like a 680 gear. >> Yeah. >> You got 630 horsepower and car weighs 2,650 lb. >> Yeah, but when I first saw this thing >> these up?" But, um I don't know, man. Years of practice, I guess. >> I was the same way. I I thought these things had like small block Chevys or something. I come in here and see that, I'm like What the heck do you do with that in this [clears throat] car? That just seems >> Yeah, uh our family uh is the only Fords in the field. Everybody else is Chevrolet 18° stuff. >> Really? >> Yep. Yep. We were able to hook up with uh Yates years ago and we've always had We've had Fords for golly, I don't know 15 years now I guess. You can see right…
