What happens here

This video documents the process of troubleshooting recurring starting and charging issues with an old Ford truck. The narrator encounters multiple problems throughout a day of errands, including cold-weather starting difficulties, issues with an automatic gate, and ultimately, the truck failing to start after refueling. Through self-diagnosis, assistance from neighbors, and professional testing at an auto parts store, he narrows down the potential causes to a loose alternator belt, incorrect engine timing, and a dragging starter. The project culminates in a plan to address these issues for a reliable vehicle.

hey folks it's josh tony rich farmer welcome to the farm vlog today got a few errands to run today finally going to go to the post office and set myself up a p.o box for the Stoney Ridge Farm channel the hundred dollar farm trucks doing great I have not started it this morning it's 16 degrees and I'm about to freeze to death right now my hands are turning into popsicles we also have something else on the farm that's very cute our Black Goat whitey had two babies so we're gonna go up and see her new babies after we go get some feed from the feed store just take you along with me on a little journey today so let's see how the hundred dollar truck starts up in 16 degree weather I'm not too sure about this see how she does tap the gas twice hundred-dollar trucks purr like a kid guys I cannot say how thankful I am to have this thing come on with me we're gonna have some fun today [Music] so folks have been having a whole lot of trouble with my mighty mule gate opener in this cold weather when I click the button kind of dances around but it won't work when it's really really cold which is quite disappointing this is the mighty mule 350 and the weather is 16 degrees and it just doesn't work right you see it stop watch it'll open the air then it gets hung up there's a spot where it gets hung up so I don't know if you live in a really cold climate this might not be the gate opener for you let's get on to the tractor supply store so they $100 truck is just chugging along awesome we're gonna go to our local tractor supply feed store and just pick up some feed for the goats normally I like to go to this like boutique kind of feed store it's really not a Bowtique feed store it's a real farm feed store and I get this feed called super goat and the super goat feed has a lot of awesome grains and stuff in it but for now we're just gonna go to tractor supply get some of the normal stuff not the fancy food yes look at that it says 100% pure gasoline not that ethanol crap we're gonna put real gas in this thing everyone at the gas stations looking at me like I'm crazy so one thing about non ethanol gas it costs a lot more than regular gas so regular gas is 229 per gallon this is 93 octane pure gas and it's Rio 9 per gallon Oh guys we put the non ethanol gas in treat this little girl right and it won't start I think it's got a dragging starter try it again so got a bit of an unexpected issue going on here guys for some reason I think the solenoid is clicking up here and it doesn't seem to be getting any juice to the starter I'm gonna try it again it's done this before when it gets warm sometimes it'll drag or go but this time might be the last time I'm not sure what it is all right I'm gonna try it a short across the solenoid and see if it starts I'm gonna have to buy a screwdriver out on that one so the lady in the gas station was very supportive it's like what are you doing out there with a camera all right let's try this we're gonna short across the solenoid here maybe [Music] so folks on further inspection here I think the charging system is bad I think that the alternator is spinning enough to keep the engine running but when I hit the gas it draws too much power and that's why I'm getting a sputtering so we've got somebody coming to jump us off right now the lady in this store was nice enough to call her husband they only live a mile away he's gonna bring his truck over here we're gonna jump it off we're still gonna run the tractor supply and get our stuff but we're not gonna be able to turn the truck off so we're just gonna let the truck sit out here and purr it's got a nice full tank of gas so I don't have to worry about that but if I turn it off it's liable to not start we'll take off and we'll go to the auto parts store and have them tested battery and we'll have them also test the charging system if it's not charging properly that could be the issue and I'll show you what I think the issue is let me get the camera in closer here's what I think the issue is if I can turn this and that belt isn't turning then I've got an issue so I think the issue is that loose belt so we either need to tighten the belt replace the belt or we've got a bad charging system so this brings me to an interesting point while we're waiting for the guy to come and jump us off I should invest in a jump box and there are several different types of jump boxes you can get there probably about this big to this big and you need to be able to jump off the tractors lawn mowers and stuff on the farm I've been thinking about investing on a jump box anyway so tonight we're gonna order one online and I'll post a link down below - which one I order a big strong jump box that way I don't have to sit here and wait for somebody so guys we've got a kind neighbor they just had a jump box in this truck we just had talked about buying a jump box so we're gonna see if the jump box is charged up enough this time I think I'm having problems with this one this brand new man is crazy just bring on by the dirt last no no my ladder last branch I appreciate it buddy it's so awesome live in a town where everybody wants to help out we're on our second attempt he's coming in with the truck now there is less black I might have to sit there for a minute weren't you guys gonna have one take care this guy's awesome he helped me out we got the truck running he wouldn't take any payment he just said one day I might need you awesome guys let's get on the tractor supply load up with some feet it's just when you thought you're being rewarded with awesomeness in your life you get a gun at parks this far from your bumper at the tractor supply so you can't load up all this feat this guy is literally this far from my bumper check it out now how am I supposed to open my tailgate I guess I want what a goober so folks we just added a trip to the battery store you know when I bought that used battery the other day and it was such a great deal beginning to wonder if it was a great deal so first we're gonna go to autozone we're gonna have them test a battery and make sure I'm getting a good charge and everything and if it's bad then we're gonna run down to the battery store and it's got a warranty on it so we'll get it replaced so it went to the local autozone and tested the charging system and everything's charging appropriately so we're back to the used battery place I'm a little wary to buy any batteries from this guy again but I hear he really stands by his product but I don't know what do you come and jump me off when I'm 20 miles away I don't know thank from now on we're gonna buy new batteries lesson learned guys it looks like why he's taking good care of our baby we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna unload all this feed give the goats a little bit of feed for the day the issue we're having with all this cold weather is that the water is frozen solid let me show you let me grab a bucket here so the water buckets are absolutely frozen solid so we're gonna have to go down and get some water out of the well pump and fill this water air up for them so they got some water we're gonna have to do this for the next couple days because it's supposed to be down in the teens every night and the high today is only supposed to be 31 degrees so there's no other way to say it other than I'm kind of stumped on the truck so we took it and had the battery tested the battery's just fine we took in to had the alternator and a whole charging system tested it's fine when I took it to the battery place the guy said man your alternator belts loose and we know about that when he heard the engine run he said well the timing seems off he said those old Ford engines are really bad about getting off on the timing and you have to adjust that timing because what it does it puts it in a bind and it makes a starter have to work extra extra hard and he heard it start and he said it sounds like your starter is dragging dragging so I guess if your starter is dragging it happens once your engines work one thing that's really easy to solve is to go ahead and get new belts and tighten that alternator and the next thing is to check the timing and the next thing is to replace that starter and I think I'm just gonna go ahead and replace it just for peace of mind I'd rather not be stranded again any mechanic advice would be greatly appreciated guys I'm no mechanical expert it puzzles me if it's the starter why did it start so good this morning I don't know let's get the speed in the bucket I got two different types of video I got a sweet feed and a pelletized feed so one positive thing that's come out of all this cold cold weather means frozen ground means no mud that's awesome let's get busy Josh why do you cut the bag instead of pulling you straight if we pull the string on the top of the bag it leaves more trash if we just cut the bag it leaves less trash therefore still getting the same goal done chef Brad Oh hamstrings and little wrappers all over the farm there's a specific way I cut it let me show you so first I take my knife and I cut downward in that direction Jim I go across that way when I picked the bag up all of it dumps out if you just cut the bag across the end up having to shake it and struggle with it now we don't have to struggle one thing I've learned over time here is that sweet feed with molasses and it will freeze up and it'll get really hard so that's why I bought some pellets and some sweet feed with molasses you just had sweet feed in these cold mornings and these cold mornings you wouldn't be able to scoop it out it's a little fun [Music] let's get on down here to the firewood pile I got to get some firewood together because my wife's truck is in the garage and it's taken apart right now I haven't told you about this yet because it's a future video but where she hit a deer we saved a whole lot of money by doing a whole lot of the work ourselves and today and tomorrow will be the days I'll be putting it back together it just so happens these are the coldest days of the year and I'm gonna freeze to death while I'm trying to do it we've got to go get some firewood got to get a fire going in the shop [Music] now thanks a lot for joining me here on the Stoney Ridge farm today man it's been chilly the last few days we've got a bunch more cold nights and we're gonna have to take care of our animals and make sure everybody's got plenty of food and water we're gonna finish up loading up this firewood take it down and get a good fire started in the wood stove and try and enjoy the rest of the day so please click that like button if you like what you see here subscribe to the channel if you're not already subscribed and click that little bell down there it'll notify you when I post a new video so you can watch it guys thanks a lot I hope you learned a little some today if you got any tips or suggestions on the ol hundred dollar truck please let me know if this is your first time here guys we only paid a hundred bucks for this truck so it's gonna be a project it's a good time come on back and see me now all
