(10,390 characters)hey folks its Josh journey rich farmer welcome to the farm blog today today we're at my dad's house we're at my pops house we're gonna have a little bit of fun we're gonna walk around the farm a little bit and talk to you about what's going on here on his farm so in the next few weeks at some point I've already talked about this in another vlog but in the next few weeks we're going to be killing a hog and processing it the old-fashioned old farm way so look at this garden what a great winter garden guys come along with me I got something cool to show you it's a barn find and it's on my family's land and it's a 1952 Willys Jeep so come on along today we'll show you around the farm we'll show you how we're preparing for the pig and we'll show you the cool garden pretty all right [Music] Neeraj from the folks were at my dad's place right here and this is a cayenne pepper bush he just handed it to me he's like hey you want some cayenne peppers he said they preserved themselves and right here is a what is it called a Thai chili a Thai chili bush down here and what's this right here got dill weed and the garden will go over here I'll put the camera down here and show you so these are mustard greens and kale and what else do we have here collards these are collards that's kale and more mustard greens so let's see what this kale tastes like mmm delicious I like me some kale I feel like a rabbit with rabies good stuff down and then cook your potatoes in the render the law and that's fatback that's cured naturally in the salt box how long has it been in the salt box okay nice how long does that have sit in the salt two weeks two weeks awesome I might have to talk him into sending me back with some of that stuff mm-hmm my Stoney Ridge belly so folks we haven't done a lot of talking about my upbringing this is where I grew up this is the house I grew up in we're in an area called Axton Virginia if any of you motocross guys have ever heard of Axton sugar tree motorcycle track is right over the hill from us and also Martinsville Speedway the racetrack the NASCAR race track is right over the hill here too so true southern culture here guys so folks this might not be very special to you but it's very special to me and I'm taking you to a very special place this is the place that I grew up this is the house I grew up in these are the fields and the places that me and my sister used to play as a kid back down here in the woods this area used to be cleared and we had some chestnut trees up here on the top of the hill well my dad had the foresight when we were about 10 years old to get buckets full of chestnuts and we planted this whole valley we call it a holler where we're from we planted this whole holler up with chestnuts so now wild turkeys come up here all the time squirrels and I grew up eating squirrel and wild turkey and mud turtles and all sorts of stuff I mean we lived off the land and that's just how we did it I grew up differently I grew up different than most people now we didn't have to haul water back and forth to the creek but I have a uncle that did it up until he was 50 we live back in the woods beautiful place I can't wait to take you over to the barn just all the memories and stuff that are really surrounding me right here the place I grew up the place I call home let's walk and talk here my grandfather had the foresight to buy land when we were younger so I guess even before me back in the 50s my grandfather had enough foresight to buy some land and he ended up buying somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 acres and I think at that time land was probably going for about 10 12 18 dollars an acre something like that so it still was a lot of money back in the 50s but grandpa was smart and he did his homework and he made an investment in land now we still have that legacy to pass on to the family over there was a barn over there in a minute let's go up here and check out the hog operation and now a lot of folks have left comments about my farm and where I got it and all that stuff and whether I inherited it or I bought it or what well the Stoney Ridge farm is 100% me and my wife the bun our land I'm going to get a start a fresh start in a new spot and that's what we did this is where we used to hang hams and when I was a kid it's our smokehouse so folks right here is where the hog processing starts okay so the first part of this process is will dispatch the hog the next part of this process is scalding the hog and this is the pit where will scoff a hog there's a big Pike and we'll go over and take a look at that here in a second but it'll sit right over this and there'll be a fire built in that ditch and the smoke will go out through that pipe so it's not blowing in your face the whole time we're going to take you through this step-by-step piece by piece an old-time southern hog killing so guys I'm really really looking forward to that one of the reasons I started this whole channel this whole Stoney Ridge farm idea was to show people the old way the simple way the way my ancestors used to do it here in the Appalachia that's my dad over there and he learned how to do this for my great-grandpa awesome so we're gonna walk over here to this other barn where the tank is held and this barn I think was built back in the 1950s is used to store hay and fondest memories of childhood this place was a big big mud hole with cows cold frozen mud here's the pot guys let's talk about it a little bit so folks this is the pot right here that the hog will be in we're gonna turn it over so you can see the inside of it okay it's a big handmade square pot alright so inside this pot goes a 550 pound hog and there'll be scalding water in here you take the pig you lay them in here and you scrape the hair off of these scraping devices that we have and I got a bunch of those okay guys so once we post this video if you guys are interested in getting some of these old-time hog scrapers I found the only place in the country that still makes these old-time hog scrapers and I bought like 50 of them so anyhow we'll show you all that when we do the hog killing video I think my dad's getting a kick out of this he's havin to get all the time so folks when I was a kid this was the hub of activity on the farm okay this was the barn this is where me and my sister and my dad and my mom all spent our time over here every waking hour of the day all we did was sleep and eat at the house we didn't watch TV we might have watched a half-hour TV at night let's go in the barn and check it out show you what you've been waiting for Willie's Jeep so the horses and goats and stuff used to stay in they're kind of all storage here and here we are the old Willys Jeep this is a 1952 Willys Jeep the army-issued Willys Jeep buried up was driven in here and parked so folks growing up on the farm in the hills and hollers this is what we rode around in we rode around in this old Willys Jeep it's a 1952 Willys Jeep my dad drove it in here and parked it I don't know 20 something years ago and here it's set it's got enough chicken crap on it to last us for quite some time but it's a fairly rust-free vehicle we're gonna pull this thing out in the next few vlogs and get it out take it to our farm and start using it on the farm I don't know what we're gonna do with it well we're gonna have some fun with it let me walk you around it a little bit and show you what we got so this old Willy's is an army-issue Jeep okay and I'm not sure it doesn't still have the original tires I don't know those tires are old walk around it a little bit it's got some kind of cool old horn on there I don't know if that's original equipment or not the windshield right here is gone well we'll have a new windshield for it I think the windshield frame is hanging up in here somewhere I don't know isn't that cool Willy's seats are in good shape I remember riding around on this thing and we were kids we'd ride around standing up in that seat right there good time so folks stick around on the vlog you're gonna see a lot of work on this old Jeep I can't wait to get it to my farm bear with me we're gonna get it there sometime hopefully sometime this winter but if not it'll be next spring we'll get this old Willys Jeep up and running along with the old Bronco and we'll have a bit of fun with it now I got one more thing I want to show you here on the farm it's an old corn grinder that my great-grandfather owned let's check it out so folks this is an old grain mill and the way this used to work it didn't have a motor on it right now it's got an electric motor on it but my dad got this from my great Grandpa's is that right yeah got this for my great-grandfather and I think did he lose a finger in this yes great grandpa's finger was lost right here in this little grain mill so inside it I'll take you over here and show you how it works inside so this old piece of equipment here basically you dial this down to how fine you wanted your grain to be and then inside there are little hammers hopefully you can see that inside there these little hammers spin and those are the hammers that it took my grandfather's finger off and it is guitar picking days now in the old days used to hook this wheel up to an old farm all tractor and then my dad here fitted a motor on so now we can just plug it up and make our own grain I make our own grain I mean make your own feed make her own chicken feed and make our own hog feed so guys look for this thing sometime in the future on the farm blog I want to make my own grain when I raise my hogs I want to make my own grain I'm gonna cut my own logs I want to build my own cabin I want to ride my own Willy's awesome guys thanks a lot for watching the farm vlog today just thought I'd take it around my pops place we're gonna be getting that Jeep out loading it up on the trailer soon taking it to the farm and getting it running so we can drive it around and have some fun so come on back and see me here on the Stoney Ridge farm click that like button subscribe to the channel if you're not
