TEXTURE Tips!! Create a Knockdown Texture FAST...

What happens here

The presenters introduce various wall textures, beginning with the 'orange peel' texture and the 'knockdown' texture, which is created by spraying a heavier, more inconsistent orange peel texture and then flattening the peaks with a trowel. They also mention 'Sun Valley' or 'Santa Fe' texture, also known as 'skip trowel,' which involves hand-troweling mud onto the wall to create pockets of missing material, resulting in a relatively flat texture with an 'old-world' or 'Venetian plaster' aesthetic. The primary reasons highlighted for using textured finishes, especially in their local area, are their cost-effectiveness compared to a 'Level 5' smooth finish, which requires significant labor and mud application, and their ability to hide minor wall imperfections that become visible after wallpaper removal.

Goal: This initial step provides an overview of different wall textures, including orange peel, knockdown, and Sun Valley/skip trowel, and explains why textured finishes, particularly knockdown, are often preferred for their cost-effectiveness and ability to hide wall imperfections.

[Music] this is paint Life TV I'm the Ido painter and I'm journeyman John and we're here we're going to be talking about texturing walls we've got a texture machine right here this is the Graco Tech spray RTX RTX 1250 and we're texturing some walls we did wallpaper removal these wall these walls had some wallpaper on them we removed it using a steamer M and underneath them they were oil primed they were so they came off relatively easy not the easiest but you know you can't complain but like most of the time we remove wallpaper typically the walls are going to be smooth under there or we're going to have a lot of damage we going to have to retexture them and we have a texture a knockdown texture on this house right here John what what is a knockdown texture a knockdown texture is like an orange peel texture that uh what you'll do is you'll spray that texture on heavier than you would an orange peel maybe a little bit more in consistently and then you're going to take either a large knockdown knife or we'll end up using seen a just a 12in taping knife here uh to basically knock uh little plateaus over the top of all of those bumps and it creates just kind of a a finish that covers it's a little bit different than a an orange peel texture but it's what we have here that we need to match and that's what's uh the interesting thing we've traveled we've been to Australia we've been to the UK what we see outside of the United States and even outside of oo is a lot of level five finish and that's going to be just a completely Smooth Wall this is a Smooth Wall underneath here it is but in our local in our geographical area we see a lot of orange peel we see some knock down and then we see Sun Sun Valley texture what's a Sun Valley texture Sun Valley texture can also be called Santa Fe texture skip trout or whatever else you're going to tell us in the comments that it's also called but that's where you are basically going to tr or knife on some mud and you're going to have little pockets where it's missing but it's a relatively flat texture but it kind of gives it that old world almost a Venetian plaster kind of look in a way in my theory Pro you know here in our local you see a lot of orange peel texture cuz it's a lot less expensive to apply now a sun Valle of texture is a hand texture applied more labor intensive and so it's just going to make the cost of the house rise so we see a lot of orange peel and it also hides imperfections in the walls so we have a lot…
