do you still remember how to get how to drive a heavy truck this guy gets Lippy and he doesn't realize I sign his checks every freaking week steel heavy duty how you feeling after that pretty good so think you can take both of us stop don't buy that Peterbilt till you watch this video don't get another Kenworth till you watch this video I second [Music] that all right guys we're at Universal truck in Minnesota and we're going to be looking at a brand of truck that does things different than any other brand that I know of these guys make what is called a severe duty truck Peterbilt also makes these freight liner makes these but this company does things different than any other truck manufacturer in the world from the cab from the frame from the chassis from the engineering from the application let's hook up with uh Mike right now Mike how are you buddy good how are you good all right guys this is Mike from the universal truck nice see he's got Tony in the background so Mike autocar is the only severe duty truck that has an All Steel cab all all steel cab Y and they make their frames special for severe Duty applications absolutely they don't double frame these things they they don't it's not like an afterthought it's from the manufacturer they do it plus when they put these together it's no proprietary information meaning freight liner Peterbilt Volvo if you have a breakdown in a freight liner Peterbilt Volvo and you buy a brand new one you're screwed you're chain to them right you're chained to them with auto car what they do is they make it so if you break down on some whole bunk Road out in the middle of the country as long as a guy is good with a wrench he can get you back on the road you don't have to tow it to a freight lineer a bille kenward dealer to do that and have their proprietary information put back into the machine absolutely it it's this is severe duty truck built to work it's we're kind of taking simp back to the equation and and truck manufacturing and and there's a Hu there's a huge calling for this the heavy frame built from the factory you don't need a double wallet deal with rust jaing all right guys before we get too far into this video I've got Mike from Universal Truck Center on Mike how are you hey good Stan how are you I'm doing good Mike I want to clarify this are you paying me to make this video nope I'm not paying you Stan okay so here's the thing you guys I bought a ton of new and used dump trucks over the history of my life there's some things happening inside the system that have completely changed the game since the last truck I've bought um Mike the truck that we're going to be taking a look at in this video what's the profit margins like on a truck like that and how much does this truck go for pretty low so so this is about $190,000 truck yep price varies a little bit by spec axles Etc but the profit margin th000 bucks maybe it low profit on a new truck deal um it's it's a good product for Universal and and for our customer and we believe in it and we think it's the right thing to do for people we're sick of these broken pieces of junk so okay so you're not making any money when you sell the truck and as we're going to dive into the video the thing that has changed is companies like Peterbilt Freightliner Vol Kenworth they have these now proprietary systems which force a person to go to their dealer to fix the truck so really what they're trying to do by creating these proprietary systems is lock a person into doing the upkeep maintenance and repairs of that truck over the life of that truck with one of their very select service centers yeah we're in a very Subs subscription based society and and some of the subtle key Keynotes of a subscription are you have to come to us for repair you have to buy the parts here their proprietary so sell the truck cheap because they know they have you on the hook for life and that is where the real profits of a truck are made not in the initial sale it's in everything that follows through afterward correct yes and so it looks all good and shiny in the beginning but a guy needs to understand what he's getting into when he buys a $190,000 truck he's not buying Freedom he's buying a system that he's locked into for the life of that truck or he can't get it fixed so if he randomly breaks down on a road somewhere not just any Certified mechanic can get him back up and running with the other brands but with auto car anybody that's good with the wrench has the ability to keep that truck going is that correct that's correct yeah every truck has a phone number on the door website access and if if this customer out of town they're out of my AO or they're they're not near a facility that can service a truck they can log in and and get troubleshooting device from auto car within 15 minutes no matter where they are in the country no matter what time of day and get this thing back up and running and and having a heavy vocational aspect to what we do they understand the importance of that you can't have a load of asphalt getting cold on a truck waiting there for a field service guy to come out waiting to go to the dealer get towed in you need this truck up now concrete asphalt anybody working in heavy vocational they understand uptime and and that's really the difference with auto car they they deliver that 100% through and through and that is what has changed since the last truck I bought because that was never like that before if you you could repair this so when I heard about getting locked into these proprietary Main M systems it just screamed red flag to me it just said there's something wrong with this system they're gaming the system they're making money off from these people these people don't even realize they're getting taken down the road because of the way they've got these systems set up that just was one of those big giant red flags to me so thank you for clarifying that now guys we're going to jump back into the service center and we're going to look through this truck with a fine tooth comb with Mike self right here all right thank you Mike let's walk around and check check it out steel cab it's it's built to work it's it's it's a solid piece of iron and we haven't had that in the industry for 20 plus years everything's gotten cheaper high carbon frame manufactured to to absorb the stress of the body you're going to put on so rolloffs hook lifts dump trucks uh roll back trucks with wheel lifts cement trucks cement cement trucks I mean some of the craziest heaviest Duty applications that you do yeah water tankers scale machines anything heavy heavy heavy this is built from the factory put the body on and go to work okay so now autocar is located in the United States so it's an engineering company engineering company and they manufacture here in the United States they manufacture and they try to source as many components as possible to put in their trucks locally within the United States as well whenever possible yes and some things that people don't know about auto car is what Tony you were telling me 1923 they built the first electric truck so that's correct they built two of them in 1923 been in business since 1897 okay continuously in the United States 5 years after they started they got out of the automobile business and built only heavy duty trucks ever since then if it's my understanding now aren't Peter Built freight liner a few of these other companies building their own engines meaning you're kind of screwed stuck you're you're stuck does what is autocard they don't have their own engine we have a Engine with an Allison Transmission it's just that easy two most widely distributed engine and transmissions on the market and service centers know this product people know cumins packar and and a lot of the dmer rler product like Detroit those are really relying on dealer services and cloud-based diagnostic you have to have a certain $5,000 program to tell whether or not you need to whatever is wrong with your engine your check engine light and that's really a big piece of discontent that we hear every single day in our industry people are pissed they're sick of it and we we found an alternative that just gets it easy yeah and Tony you were telling me that autoart when they're putting this Frame together they actually from the manufacturer have the holes in the frame during the manufacturing process so it's not drilled afterwards it's not weakening the frame it's not doing anything like that is that right that's correct the manufacturer of the frame is not owned by autoc car but they they produce frames to autocar specifications and that's why the strength and the kPa values on this Frame is greater than any other uh chassis currently on the marketplace and that's the standard framer that's not an optional every truck in this shop has a plastic Reservoir those have a finite life after a while the plastic you can't see it through it to see how much fluid is in it autocar said let's keep it simple and make it of aluminum which will last forever it's cleanable it's kind of the way the rest of the truck is as well but this is a classic example about how simple that we can make this truck I love that so when whenever somebody buys a truck and they have a body put on at a body manufacturer they have to wire the lights and tarp controls and and other switches in the dash the problem with that is is that the bodybuilder is deal with all different makes and and models and the specifics of wiring harnesses that's that's a lot to absorb when you're putting a dump body on you need the next one in and out in and out these guys they made it really simple there's a plug behind the cab and there's a plug in the back and you plug whatever body apparatus controls into those two plugs you paint it out you plug it it's done and we're not cutting this beautiful harness that runs all these critical controls from the cab back and going in with the test light trying to figure out where my power my ohms are that's a problem with my Tru my truck is here getting repaired and we had a guy go in and start splicing and dicing stuff and it's been an absolute electrical nightmare at Gremlin and the last thing I want is anybody going into a brand new truck and doing that I don't trust that I would rather have it done at the manufacturer than to have some guy that we don't know what he was doing the night before if he was smoking or drinking and he comes in with a bad attitude that day and he misses something because that is I had one guy when we were repairing that freight liner out there he's like oh you would't believe all the wires I had to cut and I'm just like that is the last freaking thing you say to a guy right you don't do that so these guys make sure that you can come in it's Plug and Play yeah like this when you want to add a body and by doing that what else does it do right it's protecting this manufacturer against claims that the body manufacturer is doing when they're when they're hooking this truck up when you come back from body manufacturer know all the lights are on and we're having all this trouble very often it has to do with SP wiring and and it's really it's really no shade on the body manufacturer they have hundreds of models and makes coming through and their job is to weld the hinges on set the body on paint it make it look nice and work th this keeps it the truck is the truck and the body is the body all right so autocar chassis are 100% steel they're hang out yeah okay go ahead Tony go ahead say what you got to say right here yep go ahead yep 100% Steel heavy duty how you feeling after that pretty good so think you can take both of us you freight liner or pack car mirror like pack car mirror would be roughly about $1,300 if you should damage this mirror which I promise you you will do and this mirror here would be roughly about $450 installed and painted so the difference again is buy components from the manufacturers B P them on make it simple and it's also so simple to replace it and service it that's the real beauty of auto car now they also have a 360° cab Zach go around to the other side and let's show these guys the cab and will you walk in through the cab one wow that's holy Cy this is the most open cab I've seen yeah this cab is the way I would want a cab for a truck yeah to be built this is what the cab of to me the cab of a work truck should look like yeah you got your outer windows that you can see behind you completely no not just nothing yeah cuz they they take the windows and these are all gasketed so as you're rolling down the road you can actually look behind you and see in those dead spots that other cabs fre you can look there there those are all blocked off every every truck I'm looking Bes said that's not an auto car you don't have those yeah you're losing those blind spots in the corners that that that's great that 360 view inside here you know we're always aiming for higher safety standards the the the basics of this cab are just that it's it's it's basic it's simple you can throw a hammer on the floor in here you're not going to break any plastic very very very well-built vocational truck this thing is built to beat go in the dirt go Offroad and and and work every single day and when you take competing manufacturers they're not doing that they're building Highway trucks that's the majority of their market and they're trying to make that into a vocational truck that can go off the road the it doesn't work you can't you can't take a a Prius and put big tires on it and use it to tow your boat it's just not how that's not the logic of the auto car we only do one thing we we build a work truck okay so right from the manufacturer cuz the man it's they're engineered manufactured in Alabama and this truck is made in Alabama yes and so right right out of the gate it's meant for this application it's not a retrofit it's not a conversion it's not oh oh it can also be kind of a truck which is what the other guys are doing as as far as I'm understanding this so like right right out the gate $20 Hood latches they're adjustable bang bang you're going to break those three four times in life your truck doesn't matter what it is do do you want to spend 300 bucks on one or 20 it it it closes and and and secures the hood they're not plastic either they're not no metal metal over rubber um kind of kind of one little cute engineering feature here D every driver will appreciate this when you open the door a little light to check some fluids everything's right here in front of you you're not having to jump over the engine to try to find a dip stick uh X X12 motor this is a 500 horse in this truck they're they're available on c yeah so is it cummin mostly what autocar and it is yeah so is there anything else besides the cumins that you get not right now okay good cuz cumins is my favorite engine of all time I love I'm sorry we're having great luck with with the X12 um it seems to be kind of an industry favor right now um yeah you guys fixed my 490 comings way back in the day I've been working with these guys since I was first getting started back his dad's in the office right now I haven't seen him in almost 20 years yeah much different uh engineering on these things today you know it's it the engines are a lot more complicated but this X12 people the consumer confidence it's the engine is very high Allison Alison 4500 they're bulletproof HRI Hendrickson suspension Hendrickson suspension we have a couple different uh gearing options meridor and Rockwell Rockwell yeah so so all very well-known tried and tested products here um but yeah you know when they when they built this they did they just took a very common sense approach to everything they're doing how easy it is the services this filter this is probably the most service component on the engine here it's right here it's not down here it's not up here it's not down in the muck it's it's tucked up under the hood where it's not going to be exposed to elements it's easy to service yeah I always love when I I see a a filter sticking right up by the wheel and you're like yes that engineer wants you to replace that filter every few thousand miles because that's going to get damaged and leave you stranded on the side of a road lit as far as service which is what we all are going to do on every piece of equipment that we purchase is just as simplest simplest thing for instance when you add oil or pour the dipstick out you are always going to have a few drops of oil or more that are going to fall down if you notice how far these stick out if you do have spill oil it's going to land on the ground and not on the side of the engine or the frame rail couldn't get much simpler but that just gives you some idea how the thought is how do we service it how do we work on it how make it simple okay so MoneyWise yeah let's talk dollars yeah so it's it's hard to quote the truck like this because everything's custom um but but basic basic truck dump truck quad or Quint for Minnesota spec we're about 270 out the door 275 depending on you know couple Nuance options or what your Creature Comforts are but that that's about where those have been Landing you know when you have a base truck it's how many axles the axle rating frame distance all that matters in price but but on average we've been seeing the the Quint you're quoting a quad or a quint Quint y build I mean that's done out the door with tax yep which is what is it still 18% 12% FB Federal Federal excise tax on new trucks is it 12 12 yeah I thought it was sales tax I thought it was plus sales tax that's up in that so then it's that's where the 18 comes in yeah yeah yeah yeah cuz I remember when I bought my the Freight Shaker sitting out back I was like wait I got to add an additional 18% onto the original price that I'm buying but what you're quoting is that 270 that includes everything that's out the door done built assembled you're going to work correct is that competitively priced compared to a Peter Built or a freight liner or something else or Kenworth price competitive yes quality-wise we're much more Superior in the in the durability of this truck what's the warranty on something like this so two two years TR truck and engine I know one we're we're selling here you can always add additional additional warranty and again every customer is different you know are you going to run this truck for 3 years five what what what are your plans and that really that's where really gets important on the build know to make sure we're checking all the boxes and we're we're getting you the product you're looking for okay y I've owned Peterbilt they have my freight liner here I've owned Mac Mac's not made in the United States it's all by Volvo group no okay um I would buy this before I would buy a Mac a Volo a freight liner I wouldn't buy another freight liner uh that's just my two cents or Peterbilt the only one I haven't owned is a Kenworth and an auto car it's just a model of the auto car it's C Cab forward vocational again this is a unique truck very customizable we're manufacturing this right now in an under CDL version which is a new is a new Venture for autocar and it it manage we can we can manage ufactured all the way up to 90k 90,000 us it in the same frame acmd stands for autocar medium duty so this is also a steel cap it's made in the United States it has ability to go all the way from 400 horse power all the way down to 240 horse but the real beauty of it is the turning radius is Classic Cab over extremely short turning radius but it's also a very very robust cab so as Mike had mentioned the same truck can be 26,000 all the way to 90,000 and it uses the same frame gives you some idea of a robust why would they call it a medium duty truck then Tony because at one point they offered it a 33,000 which is considered medium duty just recently we were able to uh work…
