Sponge caulking the perfect crack. Caulking new windows.

right today we're going to give you some tips and tricks when it comes to the art of sponge caulking we've got a window right here at some new windows installed in this garage and we've got to caulk them we got brand new vinyl right here um like a high gloss or semi-gloss new vinyl then it's going to be going up against this um drywall right here and I'm going to be using a product from Tower sealants called au1 and this is a product that can be used on vertical and horizontal surfaces Comes In Colors it's white it's an excellent commercial grade sealant for a project like this and it'll span you know large gaps and stuff we don't have any situation where we have to put in the back a rod on this window some of the windows needed back or Rod but this one does not so when it comes to sponge Caulking and getting a really good bead of caulking on a window like this I'm gonna be using you definitely want to use a good product Now power sealants au1 I really like the product how soft it is because it has a real buttery feel to it very smooth and it is what I call very tulable and so you can tool it very very well and sponge coffee very well I always use a um Sponge right here a caulking sponge right here um it's an open cell sponge and I get this thing wet and you don't want it too wet too much water will kind of make a mess too little water and it's going to be just dry you're going to soak in water and I like to just completely wring it out wipe my hands off you want to have clean hands at all times when you're doing a sponge caulking otherwise you're not going to get lay out a nice bead I don't wear gloves when I want to get a perfect caulking bead now it's I'm going to be starting off by like Caulking and cutting my my tip on my caulking tube now I'm just going to be taking my knife and I like cutting my caulking tube you don't want it flat I want it in a 45 degree angle and if you cut it too far down too much caulkings can come out if you cut it too far up then not enough it's going to come out kind of just there's that like middle ground so I like cutting it at a 45 degree angle there's my Angle now I'm ready to caulk I'll be using this sponge to always keep my hands clean and always keep them wet if your hands are wet you can't um what I call tool the caulking and typically in between Windows when you get too much caulking on the sponge sometimes you're putting on too much caulking so you got to take off a lot of caulking make sure this spine stays nice and clean so you're not getting caulking all of your hands or all of your clothes now I'm going to start you don't have to do call up the whole window at once and so I'm going to apply caulking just and you know maybe a half three quarters of the window and then I'll begin tooling it from there you kind of got a bigger Gap right here I've got to put a lot of caulking right here to fill this Gap behind there it's too small to put backer rod in so that's a little more difficult to deal with right there I'm just going to put my caulking on now in between every wipe of my caulking I'm clearing the caulking off my finger I don't want to wipe with caulking on my finger I want to wipe it off and then lay out my bead [Music] between sponge to get all the caulking out of the sponge now I want my caulking is going to look like here I want to wipe my tip keep my tip always clean my angle of my 45 degree angle I want to lay that down flat I'm going to begin applying the caulking down on the surface don't go too fast because it's not going to fill that Gap I'm just going to be running across looking watching as it goes down in as it's coming towards me I could see the coughing going down inside that Gap and filling the gap if you go too fast you're not going to completely fill the Gap if you go too slow you're going to have a lot of extra caulking I don't need to get too far ahead I'm going to wipe my finger get it wet and when it's wet I can lay out a nice soft bead I'm not going to put too much pressure just enough where I can feel the caulking under the top of my finger just where I can feel it I'm just going to lay it out if you press too hard you're going to pull out a lot of the caulking I can go back over it it's very toolable if I'm going to go back over it just re-wet my finger but you got to make sure it's not starting to dry otherwise it will coagulate and start to dry and you'll mess up your bead if I start again I'm going to wipe my tip make sure it's clean watch and I got a bigger Gap right here I'm watching that's filling that Gap my 45 degree angle is laying down flat on the surface I can see it filling the gap take your time you don't want to go too fast I'm gonna put some up in the corner to work that corner if I move on and I'm going to wipe my finger wet it and you can just keep wiping to make that corner smooth I don't want a whole lot of copying on my vinyl window I just want it in the crack it's going to keep wiping just take your time you don't want to be in a hurry white and wet keep wetting their finger my windows really warm because it's over 100 degrees outside so the window's warm it's going to dry a little bit faster the key is to just keep wiping keep wetting so you can tool your caulking just work those corners keep wiping keep wetting so you can keep working that corner until you get it just the way you like it so it's nice and smooth I can continue on my flat I just hit the middle post causing me to make a big bump all right [Music] thank you [Music] I like my Corners nice and full and smooth so I'll just keep working it I get it full and smooth I got some holes of spackle when this dries and then if I need to go over it one more time to really perfect it before I paint it I'll go over one more time it's like that got caulking on my sponge I'm gonna clean my Sponge Out and the 81 is a water-based construction sealant so it's just cleans with water just like that it's all clean now I like to use this au1 because the it's commercial qualities the adhesion ability to a vinyl window like this especially a new gloss vinyl window like that you want something that's going to adhere really well it'll also span the gap of two inches so if you got installers that aren't doing so well in their installations it's going to span a big gap definitely consider using baccarat if you get some really big gas and now the windows caulked ready to do some filling sanding and some painting that's how I use sponge caulk with Tower au1 and a caulking sponge and a bucket of water foreign
